India is close to finalizing several major defence deals with Israel, including the ones for two additional Phalcon AWACS (airborne warning and control systems) and four aerostat radars, together worth well over $1.5 billion (Rs 9,330 crore). This came as Israeli defence minister Moshe Ya’alon touched down in India on February 17, the first such ministerial visit after the two countries established full diplomatic ties in 1992, as earlier reported by TOI. Aerospace major Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) has signed a technology transfer agreement with Sagem (Safran) of France, for manufacture and maintenance of the latter’s SIGMA 95 laser gyro-navigation system in India. Developed by Sagem for fixed and rotary-wing combat aircraft, SIGMA 95 is an autonomous, hybrid laser gyro inertial/GPS-Glonass navigation system. It is capable of withstanding severe environments and gives military aircraft a high degree of navigation precision and operational flexibility, even in areas without GPS signals. BAe Systems, the global defence, aerospace and security major, has secured a five-year contract worth £18.5 million (Rs 177 crore) to provide the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) with support for Hawk Mk 132. According to a HAL release, it includes a package comprising ground support equipment, spares, support and training for the Hawk Mk132 advanced jet trainer.
