<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-indigenisation-efforts">Indigenisation Efforts</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In continuous pursuit of self-reliance in defence manufacturing and to minimise imports by Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) under &#8216;Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan&#8217;, Dept of Defence Production (DDP) notified 4th Positive Indigenisation List (PIL) of 928 items on May 12, 2023, which includes LRUs/ sub-systems/ assemblies/ sub-assemblies, raw material, low value critical spares and components of DPSUs for time-bound indigenisation. These items are to be indigenised within the timelines of December 2023 to December 2029. As compared to previous year, 4500+ items of Srijan Portal including 173 PIL items, have been indigenised in 2023.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To give fillip to the ongoing indigenisation, a portal – www.srijandefence.gov.in &#8211; was launched in August 2020 for DPSUs/Services with an industry interface to provide development support to MSMEs/ Startups/ Industry for import substitution.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The MoD has successfully indigenised 10,451 items during the period of 3 years since the launch of Srijan Portal. More than 34,000 items were uploaded by the DPSUs and Service Headquarters on Srijan Portal for indigenisation by Industry. This includes the 4,666 items under PILs being notified by DDP.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Standardisation of defence equipment/ inventory is undertaken through 13 Standardisation Sub-Committees dealing with specialized equipment/ technologies. During 2023, a new Standardisation Sub-Committee namely, Marine Equipment Standardisation Sub-Committee, was formed to formulate Standards for Marine Equipment.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">During 2023, training on standardisation and codification was imparted to 333 personnel of Tri-Services, Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs), Authority Holding Sealed Particulars (AHSPs), Ordnance Factories and civil industries, through two Training Institutes located at Pune and Badarpur (New Delhi).</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The 14th edition of Aero India-2023 was held from 13th–17th February at Bengaluru, Karnataka and has been the largest ever edition since its inception in 1996 with more than 100 countries, 809 exhibitors, first ever Fly past with 53 aircrafts showcasing our airpower to global attendees and a total footfall of 7+ lakh visitors over five days.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Start-ups promotion was a focus area at Aero India-2023 with Indian Start-ups being showcased at an exclusive iDEX pavilion, and at the Chiefs of Air Staff Conclave. The Annual Start-up event &#8216;Manthan&#8217; was also conducted. The maiden iDEX Investor Hub (iIH) was conducted with over Rs 200 crore pledged during iIH.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A concerted effort was made towards forging B2B partnerships at the &#8216;Bandhan&#8217; ceremony and more than 250 such partnerships with a total value of more than Rs 75,000 crore have been finalized. The partnerships are a step towards increasing traction for business, ToT and Joint development between the companies.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Defence Exports</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Export leads received from various stakeholders are being disseminated to the registered Indian Defence Exporters through online portal. This facility helps the Indian defence exporters to quickly respond to export opportunities arising in other countries. The online portal has been upgraded with a feedback mechanism from Indian Industry for online monitoring/ follow-up of the disseminated export leads. Total 245 leads have been disseminated through the portal since Jan 2023.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In order to boost defence exports, webinars were organized with Friendly Foreign Countries (FFCs) under the aegis of DDP, MoD through Industry Associations. Total 26 webinars have been organised since Jan 2023.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A scheme for financial assistance to Defence Attaches (DAs) for promotion of “Brand India” in defence was approved by the RM in Nov&#8217; 2023. Under this scheme DAs have been mandated for export promotion of Indigenous defence products of both public and private sector through enhanced financial grants to the Indian missions. For FY 2023-24, DAs of 64 countries were allocated a total of Rs. 3.76 crores.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">An institutional support mechanism has been created for facilitation and hand-holding of Indian defence companies for promoting the export of UN Contingent Owned Equipment (COE) to troop contributing countries.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In line with India&#8217;s Defence Export Strategy to enhance defence exports, 1310 Export Authorisations were issued by Dept of Defence Production to 73 countries during 2023, having value of Rs. 13345 crore.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Defence Innovations</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">During 2023, 101 winners of iDEX challenges were declared, 131 contracts were signed and 15 prototypes were developed. Three versions of Defence India Start-up Challenges (DISC) i.e., DISC 8, DISC 9 &amp; DISC X were launched. Three versions of Open Challenges, i.e., OC 7, OC 8 &amp; OC 9 were launched.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">iDEX in partnership with US DoD conducted the India-U.S. Defence Acceleration Ecosystem (INDUX-X) event in Washington DC, USA on 20-21 June 2023. The initiative will expand the strategic technology partnership and defence industrial cooperation between the start-up eco-system, businesses, and academic institutions.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">iDEX Investor Hub (iIH) brought additional funding of Rs 50 cr through ITI Growth Opportunities Fund (a venture capital fund of the Investment Trust of India group), raising the total iIH amount to Rs 260 cr.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Swavlamban 2023.</strong> During Swavlamban 2023 event on 4 Oct 2023, Raksha Mantri launched a number of initiatives.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Collaboration with US DoD.</strong> Along with 76 Challenges of DISC X, 5 problem statements under iDEX 4 Fauji and first 2 challenges under &#8216;INDUS-X Mutual Promotion of Advanced Collaborative Technologies&#8217; (IMPACT were jointly launched by iDEX and United States Department of Defence (US, DoD).</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>iDEX-Navy Venture for Technology (iNVent):</strong> Naval Innovation and Indigenisation Organisation (NIIO) and Defence Innovation Organisation (DIO) entered into an MoU for jointly working on facilitating the infusion of Venture Capital into the defence ecosystem through the iDEX Investor Hub (iIH).</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>DAC Approvals.</strong> Indigenous Design &amp; Development of Defence Systems has been undertaken through &#8216;Make Procedure&#8217; provided under Defence Acquisition Procedure-2020. In 2023, 18 projects were accorded &#8216;Approval-in-principle&#8217; bringing the total tally to 149 projects. Also, 11 projects have been accorded Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) in 2023, taking the number of AoN projects to 60.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Defence Industrial Corridors.</strong> Two Defence Industrial Corridors (DIC) have been established at Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu to boost Defence Manufacturing ecosystem in the country with intent to attract investment of Rs. 10,000 Crore in each DIC. In Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor (UPDIC), Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA), the nodal agency, has signed 138 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with industries, etc. Actual investment of Rs. 2656 core has been made in UPDIC. In Tamil Nadu Defence Industrial Corridor (TNDIC), Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO), the nodal agency, has made arrangements through 57 MoUs, etc. Actual investment of Rs. 4085 Crore has been made in TNDIC.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Helicopter Factory. </strong>Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated HAL&#8217;s New Helicopter factory in Tumkuru to the nation on 6th Feb &#8217;23. During the same event, Prime Minister unveiled HAL&#8217;s indigenously designed and developed Light Utility Helicopter (LUH).</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) of the defence ministry accorded the approval for Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for 24 Capital Acquisition Proposals.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ministry of Defence said in a series of tweets, &#8220;These proposals include six for Indian Army, six for IAF, 10 for Indian Navy and two proposals for Indian Coast Guard for a total value of Rs 84,328 crores. It is pertinent to mention that 21 proposals, worth Rs 82,127 crores (97.4%), are approved for procurement from indigenous sources.&#8221;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The defence ministry said this unprecedented initiative of the DAC will not only modernize the Indian Armed Forces but also provide a substantial boost to the Indian Defence Industry towards the goal of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;AoNs accorded will equip the Indian Army with platforms and equipment such as Futuristic Infantry Combat Vehicles, Light Tanks and Mounted Gun System providing a quantum jump to Indian Army’s operational preparedness. Proposals approved also include procurement of Ballistic Helmets, with enhanced protection level, for our soldiers,&#8221; said the ministry.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The ministry said that the approvals accorded for the procurement of Naval Anti-Ship Missiles, Multi-Purpose Vessels and High Endurance Autonomous Vehicles will further enhance maritime strength giving a boost to the Indian Navy’s capabilities.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;The Indian Air Force will be further strengthened with enhanced lethal capabilities by induction of a new range of missile system, Long Range Guided Bombs, Range Augmentation Kit for conventional bombs and advanced surveillance systems. The procurement of Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels for the Indian Coast Guard will enhance surveillance capability in the coastal areas to new heights,&#8221; said the ministry.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The induction and procurement of these weapons will give India an edge against China and Pakistan in the rough terrain.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">India’s mechanised infantry is on the threshold of a critical transformation, with the army setting a brisk pace to equip its vital combat arm with a range of new indigenous capabilities ranging from futuristic vehicles, missile systems and night-fighting gear to loitering munitions, anti-drone weapons, and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) platforms, officials tracking the army’s modernisation said on Sunday.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The comprehensive road map for its modernisation seeks to transform the mechanised infantry into a more lethal, agile and integrated force capable of delivering a swift and effective response in battle, said one of the officials cited above, asking not to be named.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The army’s mechanised infantry units, equipped with the hardy Soviet-era BMP-II amphibious combat vehicles, have played a crucial role in strengthening the Indian Army’s combat posture against the Chinese People’s Liberation Army during the ongoing, tense standoff along the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The versatile combat arm brings to battle a protected infantry component directly supported by the firepower of its integral combat vehicles.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Forming the core of the overarching capability enhancement plan — dovetailed with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) strategy — is the replacement of the BMP-IIs with 480 locally developed futuristic infantry combat vehicles (FICVs) for which government approval will be sought shortly, said a second official, who also asked not to be identified.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“The army will seek the defence acquisition council’s acceptance of necessity (AoN) for the FICVs at the earliest. We are simultaneously pursuing modernisation plans for tracked and wheeled vehicles. A few approvals have already come,” the second official added.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The defence acquisition council (DAC), chaired by the defence minister, is India’s apex weapons procurement body, and under the country’s defence procurement rules, its AoN is the first step towards buying or developing military hardware.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The army has already secured approvals for the Nag missile system (NAMIS) for reconnaissance and support battalions (13 Nag missile carriers and 293 missiles), 177 infantry combat vehicles (command), and 105 wheeled armoured fighting vehicles to replace Soviet-origin BRDM reconnaissance vehicles and 1080 anti-tank guided missiles, said a third official on the condition of anonymity.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Also on the mechanised infantry’s wish list are wheeled infantry combat vehicles for standard battalions and light armoured multi-purpose vehicles with enhanced mobility and protection for reconnaissance platoons that currently use the Maruti Gypsy.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The modernisation drive will enhance the mechanised infantry’s mobility and effectiveness, and also boost India’s capabilities along the northern borders with China, said former Western Army commander Lieutenant General RP Singh (retd).</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Injecting contemporary technologies at a swift pace will help exploit the capabilities of this man-machine combination… otherwise the arm is just a battle taxi. Even Pakistan is upgrading its mechanised forces. We can’t be left behind,” Singh added.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“A threat cum capability-based modernisation approach is being pursued with the acquisition of contemporary, adaptable and niche technology, which is interoperable with other combat arms. The modernisation drive is completely in sync with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative,” the third official said.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Capability enhancement of existing military hardware with upgrades for night fighting, lethality and ISR systems forms an important element of the modernisation effort.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Enhanced night fighting capability is a top priority. The focus is on a comprehensive solution for the gunner main sight, commander panoramic sight, fire control system, automatic target tracker and laser range finder. The new gear will enhance the night vision capability of the driver and commander too,” said a fourth official.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Enhancing fire power of mechanised infantry units is covered under the plan, and is a work in progress.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is being done through third generation fire-and-forget anti-tank guided missiles, canister-launched loiter munition systems integrated on the BMP-II chassis, anti-drone capability, and integrated surveillance and targeting systems, the officials said.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“ISR capability is being strengthened with mini-unmanned aerial vehicles, see through armour for better situational awareness, autonomous combat vehicles and artificial intelligence-based integrated surveillance, detection and engagement systems,” said the first official.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">India’s mechanised forces — the mechanised infantry and armoured corps — are also inducting swarm drone systems capable of carrying out offensive missions in enemy territory with scores of drones working in formations to identify, encircle and strike targets.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“In continuous pursuit of achieving self-reliance in defence manufacturing under &#8216;Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan&#8217; and in sync with the announcement made in the Union Budget 2022-23 that allocated 25 per cent of the defence R&amp;D budget for industry-led R&amp;D, 18 major platforms have been identified and announced by the MoD for industry led D&amp;D,” stated the MoD in a written response to a Parliamentary question.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">State-owned Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), on 28 July, handed over India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier Vikrant — the largest warship to be built in the country — to the Indian Navy ahead of its planned induction into service next month, the navy said.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The development marks the culmination of a long journey – the carrier’s construction began in 2009.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“With the delivery of Vikrant, India has joined a select group of nations having the niche capability to design and build an aircraft carrier,” the navy statement read.<br>It has been built at a cost of around ₹20,000 crore and will significantly boost the country’s naval presence and its reach, navy officials said. The warship’s delivery comes in the backdrop of rigorous user acceptance trials carried out between August 2021 and July 2022.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Vikrant has put India in a select league — only the US, the UK, Russia, France and China have the capability to build aircraft carriers. The 262-metre-long carrier has a full displacement of 45,000 tonne. It has been named after aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, operated by the navy from 1961 to 1997.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It has an indigenous content of 76%. It is a “perfect example of the nation’s quest for Aatmanirbhar Bharat and provides thrust to the government’s Make in India initiative,” the navy said.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Describing Vikrant as a great national achievement, former navy chief Admiral Arun Prakash (retd) said the aircraft carrier will enhance the country’s power projection and sea control capabilities in the Indo-Pacific.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Building it has taken much longer than it should have. But it’s a good learning experience. It will be meaningful only if we follow it up with a second indigenous aircraft carrier. Otherwise, the skill and expertise that we have acquired will die out, and it will be a huge national loss,” Prakash added.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It will operate an air wing consisting of 30 aircraft, including MiG-29K fighter jets, Kamov-31 choppers, MH-60R multi-role helicopters, advanced light helicopters and light combat aircraft (navy).</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The fighters on board the aircraft carrier will use the ski-jump to takeoff and will be recovered by arrestor wires or STOBAR (short takeoff but arrested recovery) in navy parlance.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Vikrant is also expected to operate a new deck-based fighter that the navy is planning to buy — it has already tested Boeing’s F/A-18E Super Hornet and Dassault Aviation’s Rafale-M.The carrier was designed by the Indian Navy’s directorate of naval design. It has 14 decks, including five in the superstructure, 2,300 compartments, and can accommodate a crew of 1,700, including specialised cabins for women.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">India currently operates a solitary aircraft carrier, INS Vikramaditya, bought second-hand from Russia for $2.33 billion, but the navy has been arguing it needs three such floating airfields given its vast area of interest.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Vikrant will be commissioned into the navy barely two months after China launched its third aircraft carrier, the first such designed and built entirely in that country. The launch of the new carrier called Fujian on June 17 came against the backdrop of China’s push for greater maritime influence in the far seas and as its warships attempt to leave their mark in Pacific and Indian Ocean regions.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A warship’s launch marks a significant milestone in its construction and refers to the vessel entering the water for the first time. China currently operates two aircraft carriers — CV-16 Liaoning and CV-17 Shandong.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Vikrant will be the fourth aircraft carrier to be operated by the Indian Navy, first Vikrant (British origin) from 1961 to 1997, INS Viraat (British origin) from 1987 to 2016 and INS Vikramaditya (Russian origin) 2013 onwards.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Ministry of Defence (MoD) revealed in Parliament, on 22 July, the names of eighteen major defence platforms that can no longer be imported. Instead, they will henceforth be indigenously designed and developed (D&amp;D) by domestic industry.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“In continuous pursuit of achieving self-reliance in defence manufacturing under ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan’ and in sync with the announcement made in the Union Budget 2022-23 that allocated 25 per cent of the defence R&amp;D budget for industry-led R&amp;D, 18 major platforms have been identified and announced by the MoD for industry led D&amp;D,” stated the MoD in a written response to a Parliamentary question.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Under Make-1 procedure of the Defence Acquisition Procedure of 2021, 14 items are listed as follows:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>Hypersonic glide vehicles</li><li>Anti-jamming systems for varied platforms</li><li>Directed Energy Weapons (&gt;300 KW)</li><li>Light-weight tank</li><li>Self-healing minefields</li><li>Unmanned autonomous AI-based land robot</li><li>127 mm naval gun</li><li>127 mm guided projectile</li><li>Autonomous AI-based land robot</li><li>Standoff air-borne jammer</li><li>Lithium-ion/ Lithium-sulphur cells</li><li>Communication systems: AFNET switches, routers, encryptors &amp; VOIP phones</li><li>Electro-optical pod with high-res sensing</li><li>‘Plug and Play’ housing/ infrastructure for soldiers posted at extreme altitudes</li></ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Under Make-2 procedure, only Anti-jamming systems for varied platforms is listed.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Under Special Purpose Vehicle, Long-range unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and Indian multi-role helicopter (IMRH) are listed.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Under iDEX scheme,&nbsp; single item &#8211; Low-orbit pseudo-satellites &#8211; is listed.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Defence industry watchers point out that, starting from August 2020, the MoD has issued three lists of defence equipment, the import of which is embargoed. The August 2020 list incrementally bans the import of 101 items, with the embargo growing wider each year.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In June 2021, an additional list of 108 defence items was issued by the MoD, progressively banning their import. Invoking“Atmanirbhar Bharat” repeatedly, the second list – termed “Positive Indigenisation List” – took up to 209, the number of defence items that must be compulsorily procured from Indian companies, the number rising each year out to 2025.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On New Year’s Day, 2021, 69 items from the first list were embargoed for import. On January 01, 2022, another 60 items came under the ban. Another 25 will be embargoed for import at the end of 2022; 25 more at the end of 2023; another 21 at the end of 2024 and nine on the New Year of 2026.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It is unclear how this latest import embargo list dovetails with the previous two lists.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The defence industry is sceptical about whether these lists create any pressure to indigenise. The army is already procuring the K9 Vajra system that Larsen &amp; Toubro (L&amp;T) builds under a South Korean licence outside Pune, so banning the import of tracked guns is superfluous.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Meanwhile, the DRDO, along with private firms Kalyani Group and Tata Aerospace and Defence, is already developing towed artillery guns and Pinaka multi-barrelled rocket launchers. Similarly, the army’s entire requirement of tanks has long been built at Chennai and its infantry combat vehicles at Medak. Banning the import of platforms that are already being built in India serves little purpose.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Similarly, there is little purpose in embargoing the import of naval warships, when most of them are already being built in Indian shipyards. According to official navy figures, of 48 warships under construction, 46 are being built in India; only two frigates are being constructed in Russia.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Similarly, Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) is already building the majority of the air force’s fighter and trainer aircraft in India, with the recent exception of the Rafale. Banning the import of aircraft such as the Tejas Mark 1A and the Light Combat Helicopter serve little purpose, since these are indigenously designed and manufactured aircraft, as is the HTT-40 basic trainer aircraft.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“These 18 platforms (announced on 22 July) have been distributed between four indigenous routes prescribed in the Defence Acquisition Procedure-2020, namely, Make-I, Make-II, Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) and Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX),” said the MoD.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“These 18 platforms have been identified after extensive consultations between the services, DRDO and the defence industry,” said the MoD.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">According to the Minister of State for Defence, “These major platforms… have been identified taking into consideration multiple factors like the capabilities of Indian industry, being cost effective, faster and scalable; current technological advancements; requirement of future warfare; operational challenges; need for import substitution etc.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Ministry of Defence has set a target of Rs 1.75 lakh crores of defence production by 2025, which includes exports of Rs 35,000 crores, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on 13 July.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The minister exhorted the Non-Official Directors (NODs) of DPSUs to ensure smooth implementation of various initiatives taken by the government towards achieving &#8216;Aatmanirbharta in Defence&#8217;.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">He was addressing the CMDs and NODs of DPSUs during the first-of-its-kind workshop organised by the Department of Defence Production in New Delhi.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Rajnath asserted that the country was witnessing a transitional phase towards self-reliance and active and collective efforts were central to realise Prime Minister Narendra Modi&#8217;s vision of &#8216;Aatmanirbhar Bharat&#8217;.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">He listed various initiatives taken by the MoD to achieve self-reliance, including simplification of the acquisition process of defence equipment/platforms under the Defence Acquisition Procedure 2020; flexibility in Offset guidelines; increase in FDI limit to 74 per cent under Automatic Route and up to 100 per cent under the government route; simplification of the process of obtaining a license; launch of Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) initiative and enhanced use of Artificial Intelligence in the defence sector.</p>

In May 2022, MoD signed a contract with BDL for supply of ASTRA MK-I Beyond Visual Range (BVR) Air to Air Missile (AAM) and associated equipment for the Indian Air Force and Indian Navy at a cost of INR 2,971 crore under Buy (Indian-IDDM) category. In February 2022, BDL and the Indian Army signed a contract worth INR 3,131.82 crore for the manufacture and supply of Konkurs-M anti-tank guided missiles. The contract will be executed in three years13. HAL has successfully integrated and tested AASM Hammer from Tejas. The air-to-surface munition (AASM) Hammer is a precision-guided munition developed by Safran Electronics and Defence. IAF had ordered the Hammer for HAL Tejas in 2021.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Indian Army has placed orders for six units of Swathi Mark II Weapon Locating Radar with BEL at an approx. cost of INR 400 crores. Mark II is high altitude optimized variant of the Swathi Weapon Locating Radar that has been cleared after going through a fresh round of trials in the mountain terrain. Swathi Mark II Weapon Locating Radar has been developed by LRDE that is mounted on a BEML-manufactured 6×6 truck, instead of the baseline Swathi that is mounted on an 8×8 heavy-duty truck for easier operations in the mountain terrain. Mark II also has some performance improvements over its predecessor which likely will translate into more orders in near future coming from the Army for the new variant.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Indian Army has inducted Igla-S systems recently bought from Russia under emergency procurement. The contract was signed in December 2020 and the equipment was delivered by December 2021. This includes 24 launchers, 216 missiles and testing equipment. Indian Army and IAF also began to induct advanced Spike anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs) with longer range and greater armour penetration capabilities. They were ordered under emergency procurements last year. The Israeli family of Spike ATGMs is equally lethal and versatile. The Army is inducting the Spike LR-2 launchers and missiles, which have a ground strike range of 5.5-km, while the IAF is integrating its Russian-origin Mi-17 V5 armed helicopters with Spike NLOS (non-line of sight) missiles that can destroy ground targets around 30-km away.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">TASL and L&amp;T have jointly delivered the 100th Akash Air Force Launcher (AAFL) for IAF. AAFL is a multi-technology Weapon Launch Platform for AD Missiles, jointly developed under the IGMDP Program of DRDO by TASL and L&amp;T and produced collaboratively. It comprises a self-powered and fully automated Electro- Mechanical Launching System mounted on a trailer and towed by a prime-mover and is a fully ruggedized all-weather day and night system capable of operating in harsh environmental and terrain conditions.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Adani Defence is setting up South Asia&#8217;s largest integrated ammunition complex (spread over 250+ acres and an investment of around INR 1,500 crore) in the Uttar Pradesh Defence Corridor. The ammunition complex will have state-of-the-art technology across small and medium calibre ammunition, along with short-range air defence missiles.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Under Aatmanirbhar Bharat, the Indian industry is living up to the expectations of Make in India, Make for the world. The newly formed DPSUs are not just catering to the domestic needs but also exporting. For example, Advance Weapons and Equipment India Limited (AWEIL) got its first export order from a European firm for major sub-assemblies of artillery guns. The sub-assemblies are worth INR 6 crore, and the deliveries are expected to be completed this year HAL signed an MoU with Philippine Aerospace Development Corporation (PADC) in April that may lead to the export of India&#8217;s Light Combat Aircraft (LCA), Light Combat Helicopter (LCH), Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) and Light Utility Helicopter (LUH).</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The first launch of the Extended Range version of BrahMos missile from Su-30MKI aircraft was conducted in May 2022. With this, the IAF achieved the capability to carry out precision strikes from Su-30MKI aircraft against a land/ sea target over very long ranges.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Recently, DRDO and Indian Navy successfully conducted the maiden flight-test of the indigenously developed Naval Anti-Ship Missile launched from a Naval Helicopter. The start-up – Gurutvaa has delivered Dronaam CUAS to the IAF earlier in May under a contract signed in August 2021. Gurutvaa will be fulfilling the remaining part of the order in the next 4-5 months. The system underwent design review in October 2021 and the first prototype trials were conducted in December 2021. A second trial of a production standard system, which incorporated suggestions from the first trial, was conducted by IAF in February 2022. The Dronaam system is developed completely indigenously and has proved effective at disrupting the GNSS (global navigation satellite system) navigation and jamming radio frequencies of UAVs.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Key air defence and missile technologies/products developed under this cluster include ASAT, Naval anti-ship missile, Pranash surface-to surface missile, Prahaar missile, Man-Portable Anti-Tank Guided Missile, Nag missile, Prithvi missile, Agni missile, Beyond visual range air-to-air missile, Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missile System (QRSAM), Akash missile.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">BrahMos Aerospace, the joint venture (JV) between DRDO and NPO Mashniostroyenia (NPOM), Russia has developed and produced the fastest supersonic missile in the world. In January 2022, BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited (BAPL) signed a contract with the Department of National Defence of the Republic of Philippines for supply of Shore Based Anti- Ship Missile System to Philippines.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Rosoboronexport and High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL) have an agreement to work together for the development of Advanced Pyrotechnic Ignition Systems to meet futuristic requirements of high performance propulsion systems for rockets and missiles. This technology development will facilitate design and development of state-of-the-art solid rocket motors for upcoming products. These products will be based on compact and energy-efficient propulsion systems. Under the aeronautical systems cluster, DRDO developed Nirbhay, a long range sub-sonic Cruise Missile capable of deep penetration into adversary territory to strike high-value targets with precision. Currently, the missile is launched from a mobile articulated launcher. It is being adopted for launch from sea and air platforms.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Under the Development cum Production Partner (DCPP) program, DRDO has allowed the private sector to co-develop missile systems with it and then also produce them. Private sector firms have responded very enthusiastically for participation and bids have been received for the Vertically-launched Short-range Surface to Air Missile system (VL-SRSAM) project. The all-weather air defence missile system is being developed to provide point and area defence against various aerial targets like jets, fighter</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">aircraft, and unmanned aerial vehicles. The canister-based state of art weapon system would be able to identify, track, engage and destroy targets with a high kill probability. It has a strike range of about 40 km.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">DRDO has developed an Advanced Chaff Technology to safeguard naval ships against missile attack. Defence Laboratory, Jodhpur has indigenously developed three variants of this critical technology — Short Range Chaff Rocket, Medium Range Chaff Rocket and Long Range Chaff Rocket — meeting Indian Navy&#8217;s qualitative requirements. Recently, the Navy conducted trials of all three variants in the Arabian Sea on Indian Naval Ship and found the performance satisfactory. The technology is being given to the industry for production in large quantities. DRDO has developed &#8216;Kautilya&#8217;, a spaceborne ELINT payload for satellite platform to intercept ground-based radars across the globe. The system provides high accuracy in direction finding and location fixing of radar transmissions. Two-dimensional Base Line Interferometric (BLI) array consisting of spiral and pyramidal horn antennas as radiating elements has been realized for Kautilya. The spiral BLI array working in the C-D band, has 7 elements mounted in orthogonal axes, one being common for vertical and horizontal BLI arrays for DF in two orthogonal directions, i.e., elevation and azimuth.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">CASDIC, an R&amp;D Centre set up under DRDO is carrying out feasibility studies for the integration of an EW suite on the Su-30 aircraft that is considered the first step toward the development of the Airborne electronic attack (AEA) aircraft. AEA platforms are capable of disrupting, deceiving, or denying a broad range of military electronic systems including radars and communications. Su-30 aircraft will retain all the multi-mission capabilities with its validated design and the capability to perform a wide range of enemy defence suppression missions. Su-30 Airborne Electronic Attack aircraft will be carrying tactical jamming pods, communication countermeasures set, EW receiver suite, satellite communications, and a high-performance SIGINT sensor system. DRDO has commenced work on the development of Nag Mk II ATGM to be integrated into MBTs in a twin launcher configuration with each launcher holding one missile. Nag Mk II is an improved lightweight ATGM with performance improvement and a minor range bump. It will also adopt some of the technologies from the Helina program (Helicopter borne ATGM) like the new jet vane control system (JVC) into it.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Ongoing Programmes and Opportunities</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In June 2022, the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) accorded Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for Capital Acquisition Proposals of the Armed Forces amounting to INR 76,390 crore under &#8216;Buy (Indian)&#8217;, &#8216;Buy &amp; Make (Indian)&#8217; and &#8216;Buy (Indian-IDDM)&#8217; categories. These include AoN for Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGMs) and Weapon Locating Radars (WLRs) for the Indian Army amongst others.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In March 2022, the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) accorded Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for Capital Acquisition proposals of Armed Forces amounting to INR 8,357 crore. These include procurement of Air Defence Fire Control Radar (Light) and GSAT 7B Satellite. There is substantial opportunity for the Indian industry once strategic missiles are approved for series production. MSMEs could participate in the supply chain for these missiles. Recent missile tests indicate validation of different missile systems. Some of the successful missile tests since January 2022 till date include Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile Agni-4, Short-range ballistic missile Prithvi-II, Vertical Launch Short Range Surface to Air Missile (VLSRSAM), ATGM HELINA, Akash-NG, Medium Range Surface to Air Missile (MRSAM), Man Portable Anti-Tank Guided Missile (MPATGM).</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The proposal to buy two new regiments of the Akash Prime missile air defence missiles systems is at an advanced stage. The development is coming at a time when the Indian Army&#8217;s Western and South Western commands carried out around a dozen test firings of the existing version of the Akash missiles in the force. A major ongoing program of the Indian Army is the procurement of 220 Air Defence Guns. Further, in May 2022, MoD issued an RFI to procure approximately 250 Long Range Satellite navigation system Guided Missile (LRSGM).</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Going forward, along with need for strategic air defence systems and integrated air defence command, there is a requirement to meet the changing needs posed by the contemporary battlespace. Air defence battle management is a complex, system-of-systems integration with all radars, sensors, weapons, and personnel connected. Its advantages include saving manpower and efficient use of the whole fire chain &#8211; one person can operate and respond to the complete chain, support tools to optimize and increase combat effectiveness, technology-enabled warfare strategy and tactics. Netcentric Operations systems must be indigenous since no country will share their warfare tactics. India, as per its perceived enemy profile and the geo-political situation, needs to digitize its concept of operations accordingly.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-multirole-fighter-aircraft-acquisition">Multirole Fighter Aircraft Acquisition</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Indian Air Force has plans of acquiring 114 Multirole Fighter Aircraft (MRFA) under &#8216;Buy Global and Make in India&#8217; scheme under which Indian companies would be allowed to partner with a foreign vendor. The Indian Air Force has to rely heavily on these 114 fighter jets for maintaining its superiority over the neighboring rivals Pakistan and China.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Amid a big push for the Aatmanirbhar Bharat scheme by the PM Narendra Modi-led government, the Indian Air Force is planning to acquire 114 fighter jets of which 96 would be built in India, and rest 18 would be imported from the foreign vendor chosen for the project.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As per the plan, after the initial 18 aircraft are imported, the next 36 aircraft would be manufactured within the country and the payments would be made partially in foreign currency and Indian currency. The last 60 aircraft would be the main responsibility of the Indian partner and the government would make payments only in Indian currency. The payment in Indian currency would help the vendors to achieve the over 60 per cent &#8216;Make-in-India&#8217; content in the project.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Boeing&#8217;s F-15EX and F/A-18 Block III Super Hornet, Saab&#8217;s JAS-39 Gripen, Lockheed Martin&#8217;s F-21 and Dassault Aviation&#8217;s Rafale are expected to participate in the tender. Of these, the F 21 and Gripen are single-engine aircraft, while the rest are twin-engines. While the single-engine fighters are cheaper, it is not known whether that will be a consideration for the IAF acquisition.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Interim Plans</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The 36 Rafale aircraft procured under emergency orders helped immensely in maintaining an edge over the Chinese during the Ladakh crisis which started in 2020 but the numbers are not enough and more such capability would be required by it. The IAF is highly satisfied with the operational availability of the Rafale fighter jets and wants similar capability in its future aircraft.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The IAF has already placed orders for 83 of the LCA Mk 1A aircraft but it still requires a higher number of capable aircraft as a large number of MiG series planes have either been phased out or are on their last legs.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The fifth-generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft project is moving ahead at a satisfactory pace but it will take a lot of time to be able to be inducted in an operational role.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The IAF is also looking for a cost-effective solution for its fighter jet requirement as it wants a plane that is low on operational cost and gives more capability to the service.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Rafale</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The main contender is the Rafale fighter which the IAF is already accustomed to, since 36 of these fighters, bought under a&nbsp; 2016 government to government deal and costing Euro 7.8 billion — are already in use by the IAF.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Known as an omnirole aircraft — one which can conduct complex combat assignments, including ground attacks, beyond visual range (BVR) air-to-air combats or interceptions, during the same sortie — the Rafale fighter is a &#8216;4.5 generation aircraft&#8217;, with a top speed of 1.8 Mach, nearly double the speed of sound.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Rafale is a twin-engine, canard-delta wing, multi-role fighter aircraft, fit for varied purposes, such as reconnaissance, providing ground support to troops, in-depth strikes, and anti-ship strikes.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Rafale has a ferry range of 3,700 km and is equipped with internal and external fuel tanks. In terms of weaponry, the Rafale has 14 hard points to carry different types of missiles, including the the Meteor air-to-air missiles — which come with a Beyond Visual Range (BVR) of about 150 KMs and the deadly air to surface Scalp which has a range of over 500 KMs.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Rafale has been used by the French Air Force in multiple campaigns across Afghanistan, Libya, Mali, the Central African Republic, Iraq and Syria.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">F/A-18 Block III Super Hornet</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Recently featured in the superhit Hollywood film Top Gun: Maverick — which shows actor Tom Cruise manoeuvering the craft to evade enemy&#8217;s surface-to-air missiles whilst fulfilling a seemingly impossible mission — the F/A-18 Bock III Super Hornet is being touted as a “game-changer” for Indian military, if acquired.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The F/A-18 has been the leading aircraft for the US Navy for nearly four decades. It is designed as both a fighter and attack aircraft and Block III is its latest version. Currently, the US Navy has over 700 F/A-18s, which are operational worldwide. The original Block I Hornet was introduced into service in 1984.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The version under consideration by the IAF— the F/A-18 Block III Super Hornet — is a twin-engine, carrier-capable, multirole fighter aircraft.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Block III comes in two versions, the F/A-18 E which is a single-seater and the double-seater F/A-18 F. Both versions have been built for high-loading and high-stress operations.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A major upgrade in the Block III, from the earlier F/A-18, is its “advanced cockpit system”, which is operated via a customisable 10×19-inch touch screen. Essentially, this system has replaced hard displays in the cockpit with iPad-like features. This enables smoother flight operations and decision-making, giving the pilot more time to assess the battlefield.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Further, to store weapons, Block III has an “enclosed, external weapons pod built to carry up to 2,500-pounds of weapons”. From the pod, various missiles and bombs can be fired, which include the “AIM 9X Sidewinder air-to-air missile, the AIM 120 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile (AMRAAM), the AGM-154 Joint Standoff Weapon (an air-to-ground missile), the Small Diameter Bomb and the Mark-84 bomb, among others”.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Block III has a life of approximately 10,000 flying hours. However, the drawback is that the F/A-18s lack stealth capabilities.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Boeing is waiting for the IAF to come out with its technical requirements before deciding whether they will offer the Super Hornet or the F-15 EX.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">F-15 EX</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The F-15 EX is the upgraded replacement of the F-15C. It is referred to as the “Eagle-II”. The F-15 EX is also developed by Boeing and is another contender from their portfolio for the MRFA.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The original F-15s were first deployed by the United States Air Force in the mid-1970s. Today&#8217;s version includes multiple upgrades and enhancements.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">According to Boeing, the F-15 EX “includes a best-in-class payload, range and speed”. Payload refers to the carrying capacity of a jet, including cargo, munitions, etc.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">An article published in the Air Force Magazine claimed that the advanced specs of the Eagle-II entail “digital fly-by-wire flight controls, a large area display glass-cockpit, and an APG-82 AESA radar”.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Further, the F-15EX is built with an open mission system software, which allows the operating network of the fighters to undergo rapid upgrades and capability enhancements. Ensuring it is never outdated from the latest standards in the industry.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Congressional Research Service (CRS), a public policy research institute of the US Congress, explains that the F-15EX have “stronger airframes, more powerful processors and advanced flight control systems” than any other fighter operated by the United States Air Force.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The F-15EX is capable of firing AMRAAM. The US Air National Guard conducted a successful firing of the AIM-120D AMRAAM from the F-15EX over the Gulf of Mexico in February 2022.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The F-15 EX also boasts a flying life of 20,000 hours, much longer than the average flying time of fighters, which ranges between 6,000-to 8,000 hours.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">F-21</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The F-21s are a product of the US defence conglomerate Lockheed Martin.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The F-21 is an adapted and advanced version of the F-16 and is specially tweaked by the manufacturer to cater to the needs of the IAF. The F-16 is commonly called the “Fighting Falcon”. However, the F-21 is a fighter on paper and has not been manufactured yet.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The F-21 comprises both single-seater and double-seater variants. It includes three underwing hardpoints (the area on an airframe that is used to carry external and internal load). Two of these hardpoints are for reserve fuel tanks, which can be used in case travel ranges increase.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Further, the F-21 also comes with wingtip missile hardpoints, which like the F-15EX support the AIM-20D AMRAAM. It also entails a triple launcher to fire these AMRAAM missiles.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The F-21 is equipped with a retractable fuel probe, an essential element for IAF fighters to ensure smooth fuelling at their bases.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Saab JAS-39 Gripen</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Saab JAS-39 Gripen is a light, single-engine, multirole fighter aircraft manufactured by Swedish aerospace and defence company, Saab AB.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It was introduced into the Swedish Air Force in 1996 and is described as an “affordable non-stealth aircraft”. According to an article published in The Express, UK, the Swedish Air Force currently operates between 1,000 to 2,000 of these fighters.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The JAS-39 was the first fighter to be loaded and capable of firing the Meteor air-to-air missile, a beyond visual range (BVR) weapon, capable of striking targets up to 150 kilometres.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The choice of a carrier-borne fighter aircraft for the Indian Navy to operate from the deck of INS Vikrant has narrowed down to Rafale-Marine and Boeing F/A-18E/F Block III Super Hornet. Trials have been completed. Staff evaluation is in progress. Indications are that it will be an Inter-Governmental Agreement (IGA) purchase.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ultimately, the aim is indigenisation. A Twin-Engine Deck Based Fighter (TEDBF) is being developed but it will take some time. In the interim, the Navy is looking for an aircraft from among the two to meet their requirements.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The procurement size was earlier 57 twin-engine carrier fighters, which is now set to be downsized to around 26, including a few twin-seater trainer variants.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-iaf-s-mrfa-acquisition">IAF&#8217;s MRFA Acquisition</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">On the Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft acquisition for the Indian Air Force &#8211; the IAF has already received responses from multiple vendors to its RFI. The top contenders for the multi-billion dollar deal include Lockheed Martin&#8217;s F-21, Boeing&#8217;s F/A-18, Dassault Aviation&#8217;s Rafale, the Eurofighter Typhoon, Russian aircraft MiG 35 and Swedish aerospace giant Saab&#8217;s Gripen jet.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In April 2019, the IAF issued an RFI (Request for Information), or initial tender, to acquire 114 jets at a cost of around USD 18 billion.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The winner of the Indian Air Force&#8217;s mega project to procure 114 Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft (MRFA) will have to ensure the transfer of technology as it would be implemented under the framework of the &#8216;Make-in-India&#8217; initiative</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The entire process will be executed under the provisions of the DAP (Defence Acquisition Procedure) 2020, the selected OEM (Original Equipment Maker) will have to comply with India&#8217;s requirements of transfer of technology and Make-in-India that would add to our indigenous fighter aircraft manufacturing capability.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The number of squadrons of the IAF is going down gradually because of the phasing out of old aircraft. The IAF is not going to reach the sanctioned strength of 42 fighter squadrons in the next 10-15 years. Hence, a two-pronged strategy has being adopted towards maintaining the IAF&#8217;s strength that involves induction of new generation platforms and up-gradation of the existing fleet.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Procurement of 114 jets under the MRFA project and acquisition of 83 Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas will help the IAF significantly enhance its combat prowess.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">India is also working on an ambitious USD 5 billion project to develop a fifth-generation medium-weight deep penetration fighter jet to significantly bolster its air power capability.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">IAF’s Current Fleet</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Presently, India operates six kinds of fighter aircraft – Su-30MKI, Rafale, Tejas, MiG-29, Mirage 2000 and MiG-21. Considering MiG-21’s frequent accidents, the IAF is expected to decomm-ission the ageing aircraft by 2025. So effectively, we have five types of fighter jets.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Among all, Sukhoi Su-30MKI is the largest and primary fleet of the Indian Air Force. With a total of 284 operational numbers, the Russia-made Sukhoi is an air superiority fighter with additional air-to-ground strike capability.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Next is the Jaguar (Shamsher). IAF has 139 Jaguars. Attached with EL/M-2052 AESA radars and new avionics, Jaguar is considered a ground attack specialized fighter jet.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Dassault Mirage 2000 (Vajra), is the fourth generation single-engine multi-role fighter jet. Currently, about 50 different variants of Mirage are being operated by IAF. In February 2019, Mirage-2000 fighter jets were used to hit terror camps in Balakot inside PoK. Attached with Israeli laser-guided SPICE bombs, the Mirage-200 is a highly reliable aircraft for India.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With all these fourth-generation fighter jets, India now has inducted 36 Dassault Rafales – A French twin-engine canard delta wing multirole fighter jet is capable of performing air supremacy, interdiction, aerial reconnaissance, ground support, in-depth strike, anti-ship strike, and nuclear deterrence missions.</p>
