NewSpace Research and Technologies (NRT) has been awarded a contract by iDEX – DIO for design and development of a stratospheric High Altitude Pseudo Satellite (HAPS) UAS for the Indian Navy.

Largely geared towards the Indian naval needs in the IOR, this program is one of the path breaking contracts awarded under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative and the DAP2020, with assured MOQs and a direct procurement post realisation of TRL 7-9. It is also one of the only few real world commitment for a HAPS class UAS product development effort across the world.

As one of the only two organisations in India carrying our indigenous development of a HAPS UAV from the ground up (arguably one of most difficult aerospace platform to realise); NRT will leverage its experience gained from successfully developing and flight testing the technology demonstrator as part of the previous iDEX – DIO sub scale aircraft development with the Indian Air Force.

NRT expects to develop this cutting edge dual use platform in the years ahead, focussing on persistent ISR, communication, ELINT missions of the Indian military and the communication needs, including beaming down of WiFi and 5G networks, as well as disaster monitoring applications from the stratosphere for civilian use cases.

While highlighting the development of a new defence ecosystem in the country, prime minister Narendra Modi, on 18 July. said the goal of self-reliance in the Indian forces is very important for the India of the 21st Century.

During his address at the Naval Innovation and Indigenisation Organisation seminar,Modi emphasised on how research and development has been opened up for the private sector, academia, MSMEs and start-ups in today’s defence ecosystem. He added that the country is moving fast from being the biggest arms importer to a big exporter in the defence sector.

The government is taking all the necessary steps to strengthen the public sector defence companies by organizing them in different sectors. Premier institutions like IITs are being utilized in the fields of defence research and innovation.

“In the last 8 years, we have not only increased the defence budget, but we have also ensured that this budget is useful in the development of the defence manufacturing ecosystem in the country itself. Today, a large part of the budget earmarked for the purchase of defence equipment is being spent on procurement from Indian companies, “he added.

The defence imports in the last 4-5 years have come down by 21 per cent.

As a part of the ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’, NIIO in association with the Defence Innovation Organisation (DIO), aims at inducting at least 75 new indigenous technologies and products into the Indian Navy.

To celebrate the 75th year of independence, the Navy has proposed to develop and induct at least 75 new indigenous technologies and products in the coming year. An MoU has been signed between the Defence Innovation Organisation (DIO) and Naval Innovation and Indigenisation Organisation (NIIO) to work on a collaborative project named “SPRINT” (Supporting Pole-Vaulting in R&D through iDEX, NIIO and TDAC).

“The Indian Navy in conjunction with DIO shall be unveiling the problem statements for Indian industries as part of iDEX(SPRINT) during the NIIO seminar ‘Swavlamban 2022’ scheduled on July 18 and 19 at DrAmbedkar International Centre,” said Navy officials. The purpose of the seminar is to engage domestic Industry and academia, commented Navy officials, towards achieving self-reliance in the defence sector. The Navy has accepted the of Atmanirbhar Bharat challenge and reinvested over 64 per cent of its capital budget into the country’s economy.

The NIIO was launched two years ago to realise Defence Acquisition Policy (DAP 2020) objectives which envisage creation of ‘Innovation and Indigenisation Organisations (IIOs)’ within service headquarters (SHQs).

A Bengaluru-based EV platform startup — Tresa Energy — has begun a 12-month pilot (prototype-stage) to build a Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) called the “EV.7M RIB”. The lightweight, high-performance RIB, which can seat 18 people, will be useful for patrolling, interception, search and rescue, and transport by the Navy.

According to Tresa, the EV.7M RIB can do all of these with a higher stealth mode and cannot be detected by heat maps, as it does not generate heat or sound.

The firm has received Rs 3 crore as grant from the DIO under under MoD’s open challenge- iDEX (Innovation for Defence Excellence) to build specific EV platforms. Later, the DIO (defence innovation organization) gave a use-case to build the RIB, which pushed them to build boats.

Tresa Energy hopes to do the initial prototype test by February 2023, and deliver it to the Navy by April 2023.

Tresa, a high-performance EV platform start-up building next-generation EV powertrains and platforms, is into research, design, and manufacture of high-precision components. Its high-energy dense EV powertrains can be customised exclusively for high-end cars, buses, trucks, aerial and marine vehicles.

The Startup Incubation and Innovation Centre, IIT-Kanpur (SIIC IIT-Kanpur) recently signed an MoU with Defence Innovation Organisation (DIO) to nurture and support start ups and SMEs in the defence sector through its flagship programme iDEX Prime. To facilitate this partnership, the team at iDEX organised an awareness session on May 6 on the pool of funding opportunities available to the innovators developing solutions to serve the defence requirements.

iDEX was launched in 2018 with an agenda to cater to day-to-day requirements of the Border Services through technology solutions. The programme will foster product development for the Indian Military Services and expose innovators to the Defence infrastructure to achieve promising outcomes.

iDEX Prime has launched a total of six problem statements along with 38 challenges under DISC 6 that have been gathered from the armed forces, coast guards, DPSUs, and ministry of home affairs. Some of these challenges are Scalable Wireless Communication Network for autonomous mobile platforms, design of Active Hydro Pneumatic Suspensions with variable dampening characteristics to meet different road profiles, development of AI (Artificial Intelligence) enabled welder’s helmet for real-time display of welding parameters like voltage, current, traverse speed, electrode stick out etc for immediate corrective control by welder during MIG & TIG welding processes, AI-Based Condition Monitoring System for yard assets.
