The DRDO has unveiled a prototype of a 6.8mm assault rifle, potentially reshaping the Indian Army’s small arms inventory amid challenges in importing the SIG716 and delays in the AK-203 project. This rifle, designed for versatility, is lighter than existing 7.62mm options while retaining significant stopping power. Its development aligns with India’s ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative, emphasizing indigenous production and self-reliance. However, successful testing and establishing a supply chain for the new caliber will be critical for its adoption, as it competes against already inducted rifles like the SIG716 and the potentially revived AK-203 program, amidst evolving operational requirements.

The Indian Army successfully downed a Pakistani surveillance drone along the LoC near Jammu using the DRDO-developed Integrated Drone Detection and Interdiction System (IDDIS). This advanced system employs a 2-kilowatt laser beam that precisely targets and disables drones by concentrating energy on critical components to induce rapid overheating and failure, effectively neutralizing threats from 800 to 1,000 meters away. Complementing the laser, IDDIS integrates robust electronic warfare measures including jamming and spoofing techniques that disrupt the drone’s communications and GPS signals, while its sensor fusion—drawing on radar and EO/IR inputs— provides comprehensive target tracking to ensure swift engagement with minimal collateral damage. This multifaceted capability not only demonstrates India’s innovative approach to countering aerial threats but also reinforces its strategic shift toward indigenous high-tech defence solutions. In parallel with the current system, DRDO is advancing a 30-kilowatt laser variant to neutralize larger threats such as fixed-wing aircraft and missiles, with plans already underway for an even more powerful 300-kilowatt system named “Surya” to further extend operational range. This successful interception underscores India’s proactive integration of cutting-edge counter-drone technologies to secure its borders against evolving surveillance and smuggling operations.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) is advancing its capabilities by developing a ground-based Signal Intelligence (SIGINT) system for all-terrain vehicles, aimed at overcoming challenges in hilly regions where traditional systems struggle. This innovative system, which includes drone support for enhanced situational awareness, is crucial for monitoring adversarial activities along India’s northern borders with China and Pakistan. By integrating advanced sensors and communication technologies, the IAF seeks to improve intelligence gathering and electronic warfare capabilities. Collaborations with organizations like DRDO and companies such as BEL and TASL are expected to drive this initiative, reflecting India’s commitment to modernizing its defense strategy in response to evolving threats.

Hyderabad-based Dvipa Defence is set to supply 10 Ugram assault rifles to the Border Security Force (BSF) for trials, marking a significant step in India’s push for self-reliance in defense production. The Ugram, developed in collaboration with DRDO, is designed to meet the Indian Army’s needs with a 7.62x51mm caliber and has outperformed imported options in previous evaluations. If successful in the BSF trials, the Ugram could enhance India’s small arms ecosystem, although it must prove reliability with local ammunition and address concerns regarding logistical complexity. This initiative aligns with the Atmanirbhar Bharat campaign, reducing dependence on foreign arms while bolstering indigenous capabilities.

India is advancing its aerial surveillance capabilities by pursuing a fleet of advanced spy planes, with L3Harris Technologies and Thales as leading contenders to equip these platforms. This initiative, driven by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Air Force, aims to enhance signals intelligence and communications jamming capabilities in response to rising threats, particularly from China’s advanced ISR platforms. While L3Harris offers superior technology, Thales benefits from established partnerships and local integration, and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) provides a domestic alternative focused on self-reliance. The program reflects India’s commitment to strengthening its defense posture amid escalating geopolitical tensions.

The DRDO has showcased key components of the K-5 Submarine-Launched Ballistic Missile (SLBM), indicating significant advancements in India’s strategic underwater capabilities. With a range of 6,000-8,000 km, the K-5 will enhance India’s nuclear triad and second-strike capability, allowing it to target adversaries, including all of China, from its coastal waters. The missile features a three-stage, solid-fueled design and is set for deployment on the advanced S-4 submarines, which will have a greater missile capacity than previous models. This development underlines India’s commitment to strengthening its defense against regional threats and advancing its indigenous defense technology.

The defence ministry has signed contracts worth Rs 2,500 crore for a new anti-tank weapon called Nag missile system (NAMIS) and light vehicles to boost the military’s capabilities It signed a Rs 1,801-crore contract with Armoured Vehicle Nigam Limited (AVNL) for NAMIS, paving the way for the induction of the anti-tank weapon system into the mechanised infantry. The army secured approvals for NAMIS for reconnaissance and support battalions (13 Nag missile carriers and 293 missiles) around three years ago. NAMIS has been developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The ministry also signed two deals with Force Motors Ltd and Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd for around 5,000 light vehicles for the armed forces.

The defence ministry described NAMIS as one of the most sophisticated anti-tank weapon systems against enemy armour, with fire-and-forget anti-tank missiles and sighting systems for enhanced firepower and lethality. All contracts were signed under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) category. The Indian-IDDM category is the most important category of acquisition for indigenisation under the defence procurement policy. IDDM stands for indigenously designed, developed and manufactured.

On the light vehicles, the ministry said these would provide mobility to the armed forces in all types of terrain and operational conditions.
