The GCF at Jabalpur had been making the L-70 guns which ran on a mechanical system. There are no longer orders for the L-70s with the last batch issued to the Army last year. Now as the Army wants upgraded guns with electronic gear, AWEIL as a PSU will have to compete in the open tendering process along with the private sector.

The tenders by both Army and the IAF are for around 200 guns each. The anti-aircraft guns will have electronic equipment radars. In the meantime, even before AWEIL was created, the GCF had also upgraded the legacy L-70 guns in association with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), said sources. The last batch of the upgraded guns was supplied last year. Meanwhile, the company also makes the Dhanush 155×45 mm guns on the lines of the Swedish Bofors. Around 20 guns have been made so far with a target of 24 for the year. In October last year, the guns had cleared a trial in which shells were fired at full charge. The tests were carried out after an incident of muzzle hit was reported during an exercise by the Army. After that another round of trials will take place in which a certain number of rounds will be fired. The final deployment of Dhanush will happen after that.

CMD of BDL Commodore (Retd) Siddharth Mishra said that Konkurs-M will be manufactured under license agreement with a Russian equipment manufacturer. BDL has augmented its manufacturing capacity to meet the domestic as well as overseas demand for Konkurs-M. BDL also exports the missile to friendly countries. As a part of its global outreach, the company also offers portable anti-tank guided missiles Nag, Milan-2T and Amogha.

The Atmanirbhar Bharat mission of the Government of India has given momentum to the indigenization efforts of the company. The company is also strengthening its in-house R&D capabilities to take up product innovation in order to mitigate Indian armed forces’ product dependency on foreign countries.

“The Indian armed forces are a new customer for AT4. This order includes the AT4CS AST, which can be fired from confined spaces such as from inside buildings, bunkers and other urban environments,” Saab said in a statement. It weighs around 9 kg and has an effective range of 200m.

The AT4CS AST offered a tandem warhead with a breach or blast mode, which was optimised to defeat enemies within buildings and to destroy structures, which could create a point of access into them, the statement noted.

AT4 is one of the most popular and successful support weapon families on the market, according to Saab.

Operated by a single soldier, this single-shot system had proven efficacy against structures, landing craft, helicopters, armoured vehicles and personnel and its 84 mm calibre warhead offers enhanced power and performance, the statement added.

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), which manufactures the German-origin Dorniers at its Kanpur unit, has invited the Indian industry for the design and development and subsequent supply of fully assembled radio altimeters. The radio altimeter provides accurate altitude information to the cockpit crew during low altitude flight, generally up to a height of about 2,500 ft. It consists of a receiver transmitter and antennae for exchange of information with ground stations.

Sources said a request for information was floated by HAL about a month ago, stating that a new radio altimeter for the Do-228 was an “immediate requirement.” At present, the Dorniers are equipped with the Collins ALT-4000 radio altimeter that is manufactured by Collins Aerospace, a US-based subsidiary of Raytheon Technologies that also has a set-up in India.

More than 140 Do-228 aircraft produced by HAL are presently in service in India and overseas, primarily with the Indian Air Force, Navy and the Coast Guard.

Mauritius already operates a ALH and Dornier Do-228 aircraft built by HAL. “With this contract, HAL and Government of Mauritius have further strengthened the long-standing business relations spanning over three decades,” a HAL statement said.

The contract was signed by B.K. Tripathy, General Manager, Helicopter Division-HAL and O.K. Dabidin, Secretary of Home Affairs, Prime Minister’s Office, Government of Mauritius, recently at HAL’s Transport Aircraft Division, Kanpur.

The ALH Mk III is a multi-role, multi-mission helicopter in the 5.5 tonne category in extensive use by the Indian armed forces and has also been exported.

More than 335 ALHs have been produced till date logging around 3,40,000 cumulative flying hours. HAL also ensures technical assistance and product support to the customer to ensure healthy serviceability of the helicopter, the statement noted.

The Indian Defence Acquisition Council in early November approved the procurement of 12 LUHs from HAL with the first delivery scheduled for August 2022.

However, ordering a dozen LUHs will barely make a dent on Indian requirements for 187 new light helicopters to replace elderly Chetak and Cheetah platforms.
