<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A fresh test of India&#8217;s indigenous technology cruise missile (ITCM) system &#8216;failed&#8217;, on 28 October, after its engine reportedly developed snags. The system, a technology demonstrator, was tested with indigenously developed small turbo fan engine (STFE) &#8216;Manik&#8217; and an upgraded radio frequency seeker from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) off Odisha coast.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Defence sources said the engine developed technical glitches after the initial booster phase, and the missile system plunged into the sea within 30 seconds of the launch. The mission had assumed significance as the missile with indigenous STFE developed by Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) would pave the way for development of a long-range land attack cruise missile that the country has been expecting since long.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“The engine was supposed to start after the initial take-off from the specially designed mobile launcher. But it did not start, possibly owing to a snag. The system then fell down,&#8221; said a defence scientist associated with the mission. Since the engine did not start it would be difficult to say how it developed snags and whether any external factor was responsible for it. Issues, if any, with the design of the system will also be looked into, he added.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This was the second failure of the system in the last two years. Of the three tests of the ITCM conducted since 2020, two have failed and one achieved &#8216;partial success&#8217;. During the first trial on October 12, 2020, the system deviated from the pre-coordinated flight path prompting the mission team to kill the missile mid-air to prevent damages to human habitation as the same engine had failed to function. The second trial on August 11 last year though was &#8216;partially&#8217; successful as the engine performed as expected but the missile system could not travel the desired range reportedly due to some issues with the control mechanism.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Developed by Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) lab of DRDO, the ITCM technology demonstrator uses the sub-sonic cruise missile Nirbhay platform for validating the STFE of 450 KGF thrust class. The country&#8217;s first cruise missile Nirbhay was equipped with Russian origin NPO Saturn 36MT turbofan.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">DRDO Chairman Samir V Kamat did not respond to calls and messages from TNIE. ADE Director Y Dilip refused to comment. Both were present at the test range during the vital mission, sources said.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Nirbhay was the 10th missile to be fired by the DRDO during the last 35 days, an average of a missile every four days. India’s emphasis on fast-tracking development and deployment of the new-age stand-off weapons is a response to China’s mobilisation of troops and support elements in the East Ladakh sector.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The DRDO was expected to conduct another trial in a few months that would pave the way for the missile’s full-fledged induction into Indian military and deployment on the borders.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-missile-deployed">Missile Deployed</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A limited number of Nirbhay missiles had been moved earlier to the border with China before Monday’s eighth round of test firing.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Nirbhay is a subsonic missile, flying at a speed of 0.7 Mach, with sea-skimming and terrain-hugging capability that helps the missile stay under enemy radar to avoid detection. The missile has a loitering capability that allows the delivery platform to manoeuvre mid-flight and at the end to hit the target. The missile’s launch is powered by a solid rocket booster developed by DRDO’s Advanced Systems Laboratory, which unlike liquid propellant, are easier to handle.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The 1,000 km range solid rocket booster missile has a single shot kill ratio of more than 90 per cent. With conventional warhead, the missile is capable of deep penetration to strike high-value targets with precision, and can be launched from mobile platforms.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The 12 October tests were conducted as part of an effort by the DRDO to expedite development of missiles along the LAC amid the stand-off with China’s People’s Liberation Army at multiple points in East Ladakh.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At the LAC, the PLA’s western theatre command has deployed stand-off weapons up to 2,000 km range and long-range surface-to-air missiles in Tibet and Xinjiang after the Ladakh stand-off started in May this year. The Chinese deployment is not limited to occupied Aksai Chin but is located in depth positions from Kashgar, Hotan, Lhasa and Nyingchi along the 3,488 km Line of Actual Control (LAC).</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These new-age weapons will be based on solid-fuelled ducted ramjet (SFDR) technology that can be used for air-to-air missiles as well as long-range supersonic cruise missiles. The technology has been tested by the DRDO twice &#8211; on 30 May 2018, and 8 February 2019.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">India will formally induct the Nirbhay subsonic cruise missile into the Indian Army and Navy after the seventh trial scheduled next month but has already moved a limited number of the missiles to the Line of Actual Control where Indian soldiers are locked in a tense standoff with China’s PLA. The 1,000 km range solid rocket booster missile has a single shot kill ratio of more than 90 per cent. It has been developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), hours after India test-fired an extended-range BrahMos surface-to-surface supersonic cruise missile that can hit targets 400 km away.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Defence Acquisition Council headed by defence minister Rajnath Singh has cleared the formal induction of the Nirbhay subsonic missile. The military, however, did not wait for the formality to deploy the new missile and has already moved some of them to defend the LAC against China.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The missile, which travels at a speed of 0.7 Mach, has both terrain-hugging and sea-skimming capability that helps it avoid detection and counter-measures.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Officials said 30 September testing of the 400-km range BrahMos missiles with an indigenous airframe and booster is significant since it clears the decks for India to have the next class of supersonic long-range tactical cruise missile. The Brahmos has a liquid-fuelled booster capable of ranges over 500 km.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These new-age weapons will be based on solid-fuelled ducted ramjet (SFDR) technology that can be used for air-to-air missiles as well as long-range supersonic cruise missiles. The technology has been tested by the DRDO twice &#8211; on 30 May 2018, and 8 February 2019.</p>
