<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ins-tarmugli-commissioned">INS Tarmugli Commissioned</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Indian Navy commissioned INS Tarmugli, a Fast Attack Craft (FAC), under the aegis of the Eastern Naval Command, at Naval Dockyard, Visakhapatnam on December 14, 2023.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The ship, a Trinkat Class FAC boasts of a remarkable history and began its service as INS Tillanchang. Operating actively until 2006, as part of India’s diplomatic outreach in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), the ship was gifted to the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and assumed the name MCGS Huravee. From April 16, 2006, until its decommissioning in May 2023, MCGS Huravee served under the MNDF flag. Upon its return to the Indian Navy, the ship underwent an extensive six-month refurbishment and upgrade at Naval Dockyard, Visakhapatnam.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Fitted with MTU engines, the latest communication equipment, a 30 mm gun and an advanced Radar system, the warship will be extensively used for coastal surveillance and protection of ODAs (Offshore Development Area) in the KG Basin area along the East Coast of India.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The 46-metre ship, named after a picturesque island in the Andaman group, displaces 320-tonne and can achieve speeds in excess of 30 knots. INS Tarmugli is tailored for tasks such as intercepting swift surface vessels, executing Anti-Smuggling operations, ensuring Fishery Protection, and conducting Search &amp; Rescue Operations.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">‘Mahe, Malvan and Mangrol’ SWC Launched</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Mahe, Malvan and Mangrol, the first three ships of 08 x ASW Shallow Water Craft (CSL) project being built by CSL, Kochi for the Indian Navy, were launched on November 30, 2023 at CSL, Kochi.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Mahe class ASW Shallow Water Crafts have been named after ports of strategic importance along the coast of India, and will look to carry forward the glorious legacy of the erstwhile minesweepers which were their namesake.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The contract for building eight ASW SWC ships was signed between the Ministry of Defence and Cochin Shipyard Limited on April 30, 2019. The Mahe class of ships will be equipped with indigenously developed, state-of-the-art underwater sensors, and are envisaged to undertake anti-submarine operations in coastal waters as well as Low Intensity Maritime Operations (LIMO) and Mine Laying Operations.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The ASW SWC ships are 78 m long and displacement is approx 900 tons, with a maximum speed of 25 knots.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The first ship of the project is planned to be delivered in 2024. The ASW SWC ships will have over 80% indigenous content, thereby ensuring that large scale defence production is executed by Indian manufacturing units, generating employment and capability enhancement within the country.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Third Missile Cum Ammunition Barge Delivered</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Indian Navy, on 22 November, took delivery of the third ‘Missile Cum Ammunition Barge, LSAM 9 (Yard 77)’, built by MSME Shipyard, SECON Engineering Projects Pvt Ltd, at Naval Dockyard, Visakhapatnam, for INS Tunir.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The contract for building 08 x Missile Cum Ammunition Barge was signed between MoD and SECON Engineering Projects Pvt Ltd, Visakhapatnam on February 19, 2021. Induction of these Barges would provide impetus to operational commitments of Indian Navy by facilitating Transportation, Embarkation and Disembarkation of articles and ammunition to IN Ships both alongside jetties and at outer harbours.</p>

The model testing of the Barge during design stage was undertaken at Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL), Visakhapatnam.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Proposals to Acquire C-295 Transport Aircraft</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Indian Coast Guard and the Navy are looking forward to acquire 15 C-295 transport aircraft that are being manufactured in India in a joint venture between Tata Advanced Systems and Airbus. The proposals for the acquisition of these 15 aircraft – nine planes would be procured by the Navy and six would be taken by the Indian Coast Guard are at an advanced stage in the defence ministry.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The C-295 transport aircraft would be equipped with the required radars and sensors and turned into a maritime patrol plane by the Defence Research and Development Organisation’s Centre for Airborne Systems (CABS).</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Recently, the first C-295 transport aircraft manufactured in Spain was inducted by the Indian Air Force. While the first 16 will come from Spain in fly-away condition, the remaining 40 will be produced in India at a Tata facility in Vadodara, Gujarat.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If approved by the government, the order from the Navy and Coast Guard will take the Tata Airbus order book to 71 from the existing 56. Some of the operators of the plane are using the C-295 transport aircraft in maritime patrol roles.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Long Range Cruise Missile-Scalp for Rafale-M</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After France offered local production of submarine-launched Naval Scalp missiles, for the three additional Scorpene submarines that the Indian Navy is buying from France, negotiations are underway between the Indian Navy and MBDA, Scalp missile manufacturer, for acquisition of these missiles as part of the weapons package for 26 Rafale-Ms.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In October, India submitted a letter of request (LoR) to French government to buy 26 Rafale-M fighter for INS Vikrant.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These missiles will give the navy a significant capability boost compared to the Mig-29K, KH-31 combination. Scalp missiles have a strike range of more than 300 kilometres. Scalp missiles are stealth long-range fire and forget missiles which carries a warhead of 450 kg, that can destroy heavily defended, high-value enemy targets like command and control centres, ammunition depots, petroleum, oil and lubricants (POL) dumps and bunkers.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The submarine-launched variant has a strike range of close to 1,000 kilometres. Scalp missiles have also demonstrated their effectiveness in various wars, with the most recent being the Ukraine-Russia war, where the French supplied missiles were successfully able to destroy a ship and a submarine docked at a naval station and Russian Navy’s Black Sea Fleet headquarters.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Bought with the thirty-six Rafale fighters acquired in 2016, the Indian Air Force (IAF) already operates Scalp missiles. While the IAF Rafales can carry two Scalp missiles, its naval variant, the Rafale-M, can carry only one Scalp missile.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">India and France, on Friday, celebrated the success of the 1st scorpene submarine construction programme, the P75-Kalvari, an initiative of Make In India and sharing naval expertise between the companies of the two nations.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Additionally, the Defense Acquisition Council, the top-most decision-making body for acquiring military equipment for the Indian armed forces on July 13th, cleared proposals worth an estimated 80,000 crore which is almost 9 billion euros, to acquire 3 additional Scorpene submarines and 26 Rafale Marine Fighter Jets for the Navy.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">An MOU was signed between Mazgon Dockyard Ltd and the Naval group for building 3 additional submarines under the P-75 Program. They would be built in Mazagon Dockyards Ltd, in Mumbai.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Speaking about the French commitment to the ‘Make-In-India’ Initiative, PM Modi and President Macron also applauded the defence industrial partnerships, including the agreement between Safran Helicopter Engine and HAL for the transfer of Technology of Forging and Castings for building the Shakti Engine.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Another example of India-France’s outstanding cooperation in military aviation stretching over 5 decades is the timely delivery of 36 Rafale jets ordered by India.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Both nations decided to extend this mutual partnership in developing advanced aeronautical technologies by agreeing on the joint development of a combat aircraft engine.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It said the two sides welcome an agreement inked between India&#8217;s Mazgon Dockyard Ltd and France&#8217;s Naval Group for the construction of three additional submarines under the P-75 programme.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The document titled &#8220;Horizon 2047: 25th Anniversary of the India-France Strategic Partnership, Towards A Century of India-France Relations&#8221; said the two sides are ready to explore more ambitious projects to develop the Indian submarine fleet and its performance.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;In line with their outstanding cooperation in military aviation spanning over five decades, India and France welcome the timely delivery of the 36 Rafale ordered by India,&#8221; it said.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;In the future, India and France will extend their ground-breaking defence cooperation in advanced aeronautical technologies by supporting the joint development of a combat aircraft engine,&#8221; it added.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A roadmap for this project will be prepared between Safran and the Defence Research and Development Organisation(DRDO) before the end of this year.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They also announced supporting industrial cooperation for the motorisation of heavy-lift helicopters under the Indian Multi Role Helicopter [IMRH] programme with the Safran helicopter engine.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;To enable progress on the IMRH programme, a shareholders&#8217; agreement between Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), India and Safran Helicopter Engine, France has been concluded for engine development,&#8221; the document said.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It said these ventures are in line with the spirit of trust that prevails between India and France in the sharing and joint development of critical components and technology building blocks, based on the successful Indo-French experience in technology transfer.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It mentioned that other examples of the defence industrial partnership included the contract being concluded between Safran Helicopter Engine and HAL for the transfer of technology of &#8220;forging and castings&#8221; for the Shakti engine.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;This is also reflective of the French commitment to support technology transfer and Make in India, it said.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Another such example is the MoU between Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd and Naval Group France to collaborate in the field of surface ships that cater to fulfil the requirement of India and international naval forces, it added.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;To this end, both countries are also working towards adopting a roadmap on defence industrial cooperation,&#8221; it said.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In view of the uptick in defence industrial collaborations between the two countries, India is setting up a technical office of the DRDO at the Indian embassy in Paris.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A meeting of the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), held under the chairmanship of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, approved three proposals on July 13, 2023. The DAC granted Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for procurement of 26 Rafale Marine aircraft along with associated ancillary equipment, weapons, simulator, spares, documentation, crew training and logistic support for the Indian Navy from the French Government based on Inter-Governmental Agreement (IGA). The price and other terms of purchase will be negotiated with the French Government after taking into account all relevant aspects, including comparative procurement price of similar aircraft by other countries. Further, integration of Indian designed equipment and establishment of Maintenance, Repair &amp; Operations (MRO) Hub for various systems will be incorporated into the contract documents after due negotiations.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The DAC also granted the AoN for procurement of three additional Scorpene submarines under Buy (Indian) category which will be constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL). The procurement of additional submarines, with higher indigenous content, will not only help in maintaining required force level and operational readiness of the Indian Navy, but also create significant employment opportunities in the domestic sector. It will also help the MDL in further enhancing its capability and expertise in submarine construction.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In addition, the DAC approved the proposal to lay down guidelines for achieving the desired indigenous content in all categories of capital acquisition cases. It will help in achieving ‘Aatmanirbharta’ in critical manufacturing technologies and life-cycle sustenance of defence platforms/equipment through indigenous manufacturing.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Naval Group, a major French submarine maker, has pulled out of India’s Project 75 (I) ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to France. The French media gave this information quoting the Naval Group.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Naval Group has mentioned the conditions in the request for proposal (RFP) as the reason for exiting the project.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Ministry of Defence had in July last year issued an order to build six submarines for the Indian Navy.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The cost of this project named Project 75 (India) is Rs 43,000 crore.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In his first trip abroad this year, Prime Minister Modi will embark on a three-day visit to Germany, Denmark and France from May 2.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The RFP was sent to five big companies, including France’s Naval Group-DCNS, Russia’s Rosoboronexport, Germany’s Thyssenkrupp, Spain’s Navantia and South Korea’s Daewoo, around the world for the Project 75 (I).</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These five companies had to choose between two Indian companies, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) or Larsen &amp; Toubro (L&amp;T), to manufacture these six submarines in India.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">All three European and Russian companies have now pulled out of this project, leaving only Navantia and Daewoo in the race.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Naval Group is making six Scorpène-class submarines in collaboration with MDL.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Of these, four, the Kalvari-class submarines, have joined the Navy, the fifth is under sea-trial and the sixth Vagsheer was launched earlier this month.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Ministry of Defence had in April 2021 cleared the way for the construction of six new stealth submarines for the Indian Navy amid the challenges being faced by China in the Indian Ocean.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Defence Acquisition Council headed by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had given the green signal to Project 75 (I) under the Strategic Partnership Model.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The ministry had post that in July 2021 issued RFP for six conventional stealth submarines under this project.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As this project will be completed under the Strategic-Partnership model, the Defence Ministry had also issued the RFP to MDL and L&amp;T.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The provision was to build these six conventional submarines in the country only in a joint venture with a foreign company.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These are six conventional submarines of course, but they are AIP ie Air-Independent Propulsion Submarine.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Navy Also Wants Submarine Rescue Simulators</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The fifth submarine of Project 75, Yard 11879, Indian Navy’s Kalvari class commenced her sea trials on 1 February 22. The submarine was launched in Nov 2020 from the KanhojiAngre Wet Basin of Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL). The submarine would be named Vagir, after commissioning.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The submarine will now undergo intense trials of all its systems at sea, including propulsion systems, weapons and sensors. The submarine is scheduled for delivery to the Indian Navy in the year 2022 after completion of these trials</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Indian Navy has two ongoing conventional submarine programs, with a third one on the way.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In Phase I, six submarines of Scorpene-class (P-75) are to be constructed at Mazagon Dock Limited, Mumbai. Two submarines of the project namely INS Kalvari and Khanderi have been commissioned in December 2017 and September 2019 respectively. The remainder submarines are likely to be inducted every nine months. The last submarine is likely to be delivered in June 2022.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Six submarines are to be constructed under P-75(I) under the Strategic Partnership (SP) model promulgated by the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) on 31 May 2017. Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for the case was accorded by DAC on 27 February 2019. A multidisciplinary Empowered Project Committee (EPC) was constituted by MoD on 15 February 2019 to steer the project from ‘EoI issuance’ to ‘Contract Conclusion’. The Request for Expression of Interest (REoI) for shortlisting of SPs and Foreign, Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEMs) was issued on 20 June 2019 and 2 July 2019 respectively. The response of SPs have been received on 11 September 2019. The response of Foreign OEMs have been received on 24 September 2019. The Request for Proposal (RFP) for the case would be issued in mid-2020. The induction of the submarines would be between 2027-2032.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In Phase II, twelve submarines of an indigenous design are envisaged to be constructed in India in this phase with the experience gained and technology absorbed from the construction of submarines under Phase I.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Hunt For Submarine Rescue Simulators</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The MoD has issued a Request for Information (RFI) for submarine rescue simulators in January 2022. It is acquiring two sets of simulators that would train Navy personnel to operate submarine rescue vessel (SRV) and remotely operated vehicle (ROV) systems.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A simulator is a program or equipment that creates a virtual replica of a real-life environment, such as a flight simulator, for the purpose of training or experimentation. The SRV one should be able to simulate the actual vehicle’s rolling and pitching motions, as well as have the same “look, feel, functions, man-machine interface, and response time” as the Indian Navy’s Deep-Submergence Rescue Vehicle (DSRV).</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A DSRV is a type of deep-submergence vehicle used for submarine rescue operations and covert missions. India is one of the select countries that possess this capability. It has two DSRVs that it procured from James Fishers &amp; Sons, a UK-based company.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Indian Navy inducted its first DSRV in 2018 and the second one in 2019. Further, in 2020, a DSRV Complex was inaugurated at Vishakhapatnam to ensure the operational readiness of the vehicles with all equipment intact and ready to use.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">With a growing fleet of submarines in the Indian Navy and its plans for expanding its fleet to deal with the challenges in the near seas, India’s Ministry of Defense has earnestly pursued the DSRV project.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In the Goa Maritime Conclave attended by Indian Navy commanders and delegations from Indian Ocean countries last year, the service displayed its submarine rescue capability. Only a few countries in the IOR possess this capability.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Indian Navy is equipped with two full third-generation fly-away submarine rescue systems. It received Deep Search and Rescue Vehicles (DSRV), Launch and Recovery Systems (LARS) equipment, Transfer under Pressure (TUP) systems, and all logistics and support equipment by the manufacturer. A 25-year all-inclusive maintenance support service was also included in the contract, according to JFD.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The equipment can reach a maximum depth of 650 meters and rescue 14 people in a single operation. Because submarine mishaps can happen anywhere, the DSRVs are built to be agile and easily transportable to remote locations</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The entire system has been separated into 24 components, each with the footprint of a typical container and capable of being moved by road, sea, or air.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Heavy transport planes such as the IL-76 and C-17 could transport the DSRV, which is linked to the mother ship INS Sabarmati.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Navy also looks forward to participating in international submarine rescue exercises to sharpen their skills and deepen ties with neighbors and partners.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In April 2021, India had dispatched two DSRVs to locate the missing Indonesian submarine KRI Nanggala, but they were pulled back mid-way after the Indonesian Navy reported that it had identified the missing sub’s debris.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">During trials in 2018, the DSRV submerged to a depth of 666 meters, breaking the record for the deepest submergence by a manned vessel in the Indian seas.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The DSRV crew has also performed Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) operations at greater than 750 meters and Side Scan Sonar operations at greater than 650 meters.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">While the simulators have massive benefits, they do not aim to replace the training conducted on actual platforms. They merely familiarize the personnel with the platform that they will be required to operate. It is a time and cost-effective training instrument that is employed by militaries around the world.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In September 2021, the Defense Ministry issued a policy for increased use of simulators by armed forces to provide safe and cost-effective realistic training while preserving expensive equipment.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The policy aims to reduce live equipment utilization, ensure capability plans account for phased induction of simulators, factor in simulator requirements when planning procurements, and establish a coordination mechanism among various agencies for a combined purchase of simulators, according to a statement from the ministry.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ins-visakhapatnam-delivered">INS Visakhapatnam Delivered</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">INS Visakhapatnam, the lead ship of Project 15B stealth guided missile destroyers being built at Mazagon Docks Limited (MDL), was delivered to the Indian Navy on 28 October. The contract for four ships of Project 15B, as the Visakhapatnam class ships are known, was signed on 28 January 2011. This project is a follow-on of the Kolkata class (Project 15A) destroyers commissioned in the last decade.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Designed by Directorate of Naval Design, Indian Navy’s in-house design organisation; and built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd, Mumbai; the four ships are christened after major cities from all four corners of the country viz. Visakhapatnam, Mormugao, Imphal and Surat.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The keel of Visakhapatnam was laid in October 2013 and the ship was launched in April 2015. The design has largely maintained the hull form, propulsion machinery, many platform equipment and major weapons &amp; sensors as the Kolkata class to benefit from series production.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The 163 metres long warship has a full load displacement of 7400 tonnes and maximum speed of 30 knots. The overall indigenous content of the project is approx. 75%. Apart from myriad indigenous equipment in the ‘Float’ and ‘Move’ categories, the destroyer is also installed with major indigenous weapons which include: &#8211;</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">INS Tushil frigate launched</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The 7th Indian Navy frigate of P1135.6 class was launched on 28 Oct 2021 at Yantar Shipyard, Kaliningrad, Russia During the ceremony, the ship was formally named as ‘Tushil’. Tushil is a Sanskrit word meaning Protector Shield.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Based on an Inter-Governmental Agreement (IGA) between India and Russia for construction of two ships of Project 1135.6 ships in Russia and two ships in India at Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), the contract for construction of two ships was signed between India and Russia in 18 October.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The construction of these ships is based on Indian Navy’s specific requirements to meet the entire spectrum of naval warfare in all three dimensions of air, surface and sub-surface. The ships with a potent combination of state-of-art Indian and Russian weapons and sensors are equipped to operate in littoral and blue waters, both as a single unit and as consort in a naval task force. They feature “stealth technology” in terms of low radar and under water noise signatures. These ships are being equipped with major Indian supplied equipment such as surface-to-surface missiles, sonar system, surface surveillance radar, communication suite and ASW system along with Russian surface-to-air missiles and gun mounts.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">INS Vela Submarine delivered</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The fourth submarine of the Project 75, Yard 11878, christened Vela, was delivered to the Indian Navy on 9 November. Project – 75 includes construction of six submarines of Scorpene design. These submarines are being constructed at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) Mumbai, under collaboration with Naval Group, France.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The submarine was launched on 6 May 2019, and has completed all major harbour and sea trials including weapon and sensor trials despite COVID restrictions. Three of these submarines are already in commission with the Indian Navy. Vela would soon be commissioned into the Indian Navy and enhance the Indian Navies capability.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">INS Vikrant begins second phase of sea trials</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">India&#8217;s first indigenous aircraft carrier (IAC) Vikrant set sail on 24 October for the second sea trials, ahead of its planned induction into the Indian Navy by August next year. The 40,000-tonne aircraft carrier, the largest and most complex warship to be built in India, successfully completed a five-day maiden sea voyage in August.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Following the first sea trials, the Navy had said that the performance of key systems of the warship was found to be satisfactory. The warship has been built by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL).</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The warship has been built at a cost of around ₹23,000 crore and its construction propelled India into a select group of countries having capabilities to build state-of-the-art aircraft carriers.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The warship will operate MiG-29K fighter jets, Kamov-31 helicopters, MH-60R multi-role helicopters. It has over 2,300 compartments, designed for a crew of around 1,700 people, including specialised cabins to accommodate women officers.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Vikrant has a top speed of around 28 knots and a cruising speed of 18 knots with an endurance of about 7,500 nautical miles, officials said. The IAC is 262 metres long, 62 metres wide and it has a height of 59 metres. Its construction began in 2009.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Eleventh P-8I aircraft received</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Indian Navy received the 11th anti-submarine warfare aircraft P-8I from the U.S.-based aerospace company Boeing, according to a statement issued on 18 October. A contract for eight P-8I aircraft was signed in 2009. Later, in 2016, India signed a contract for four additional P-8I aircraft.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Indian Navy had received the ninth P-8I aircraft in November last year and got the 10th P-8I aircraft in July this year. The patrol aircraft is an integral part of the Indian Navy&#8217;s fleet and has surpassed 30,000 flight hours since it was inducted in 2013.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Scorpene submarines are extremely potent platforms, have advanced stealth features and are equipped with both long-range guided torpedoes as well as anti-ship missiles.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These submarines have a state-of-the-art SONAR and sensor suite permitting outstanding operational capabilities. They also have an advanced Permanent Magnetic Synchronous (PERMASYN) motor as its propulsion motor.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The delivery of Vela is yet another affirmation of the impetus being given by the Indian Navy towards consolidating its position as a ‘Builder’s Navy’ as also indicative of MDL’s capabilities as a premier ship and submarine building yard.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Vagir is part of the six Kalvari-class submarines being built in India. The submarines, designed by French naval defence and energy company DCNS, are being built as part of Indian Navy&#8217;s Project-75.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These submarines can undertake missions like anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, mine laying, and area surveillance.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Vagir is named after the Sand Fish, a deadly deep sea predator of the Indian Ocean. The first Vagir, a submarine from Russia, was commissioned into the Indian Navy on December 3, 1973, and was decommissioned on June 7, 2001 after almost three decades of service to the nation.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The attack can be launched with both torpedoes and tube launched anti-ship missiles, whilst underwater or on surface, MDL said. &#8220;The stealth of this potent platform is enhanced by the special attention to her characteristic underwater signatures. These stealth features give it an invulnerability, unmatched by most submarines,&#8221; it said.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The submarine is designed to operate in all theatres of operation, showcasing interoperability with other components of a Naval Task Force, MDL said.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Two submarines of the ongoing Project-75 Scorpeneprogramme at MDL, Kalvari and Khanderi, have been commissioned into the Indian Navy. The third submarine, Karanj, is in the last phase of rigorous sea trials. The fourth Scorpene, Vela, has commenced her sea trials, whilst the sixth and last submarine, Vagsheer, is being readied for boot together.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ins-kavaratti-asw-corvette-commissioned">INS Kavaratti ASW Corvette Commissioned</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Army chief Gen MM Naravane, on 22 October, commissioned anti-submarine warfare (ASW) ship INS Kavaratti into the Indian Navy at the Naval Dockyard in Visakhapatnam. Kavaratti is the last of four indigenously-built ASW under &#8216;Project 28&#8217; or orKamorta-class corvettes of the Navy. It is a class of ASWs currently in service with the Navy.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&nbsp;&#8216;Project 28&#8217; was approved in 2003. The other three warships under this project are INS Kamorta (commissioned in 2014), INS Kadmatt (2016) and INS Kiltan (2017).</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The 109 metres long INS Kavaratti (pennant number P 31) incorporates stealth features in its design as well as 90% indigenous content, including the use of carbon composites. The use of carbon composites to build it has been described as a &#8216;commendable feat achieved in Indian shipbuilding.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The warship has been designed by the Navy&#8217;s in-house organisation, the Directorate of Naval Design (DND). Kolkata&#8217;s Garden Research Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), meanwhile, has built it. It has state-of-the-art weapons and a sensor that can detect and take action against hostile submarines. It also has a good endurance for long-range deployments.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The IN said in a statement that the corvette, which has an overall beam of 12.8 m and is capable of achieving speeds up to 25 kt, was commissioned as a &#8216;combat-ready&#8217; platform following the completion of sea trials.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Among other things, the Kamorta class is equipped with two licence-built RBU-6000 anti-submarine rocket launchers, one Oto Melara 76 mm/62 Super Rapid gun, and four Larsen &amp; Toubro indigenous twin torpedo launchers for the locally designed Varunastra torpedoes, which have a stated range of up to 40 km.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">INS Kavaratti derives its name from the eponymous INS Kavaratti, which was an Arnala class missile corvette. The older INS Kavaratti operated during the 1971 Bangladesh liberation war.</p>
