<p class="wp-block-paragraph">China’s PLA Navy launched its latest Type 003 aircraft carrier on June 17, 2022, an indicator of Chinese naval shipbuilding prowess, making it the largest warship ever built in the nation.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">China now has three aircraft carriers, in addition to over one hundred warships built over the last ten years, exceeding the growth of any navy worldwide.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Displacing 85,000 to 100,000 tons, and over 300 metres in length, the Type 003 is noteworthy for the speed of its development, particularly in skipping two generations of hydraulic and steam technology in its carrier launch technology. Instead, the Type 003 includes an electromagnetic launch system, competing with a more advanced US equivalent. The electromagnetic catapult technology will allow the Type 003 to field different military aircraft, increasing the range and effectiveness of the carrier, according to a US Department of Defence report to Congress.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">China is in the process of developing a fourth aircraft carrier capable of nuclear propulsion, with leaked documents indicating that it will be capable of fielding advanced fighters and stealth jets, surveillance and control craft, anti-submarine helicopters and drones.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As China focuses on building its next-generation carrier, it&#8217;s also coming up short on aircraft to field them. With at least 22 J-15 carrier-compatible fighter jets, China will need more fighter aircraft if it is to equip two modern carriers, giving rise to expectations of a next-generation aircraft-based fighter to accommodate its new capacities.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A nuclear-capable aircraft carrier would only be limited by the amount of supplies it can carry at sea, and the resilience of its sailors, granting the ability to project force or deny across the world’s seas and coasts.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">China’s latest aircraft carrier is not welcome news to US defence officials who also have to contend with the widespread use of satellite imagery and artificial intelligence, making it more difficult for large warships to maintain the advantage of surprise.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">AI could allow satellites to quickly identify warship electronic signatures from space, despite scrambling and background noise.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Fujian’s electromagnetic aircraft launch system (EMALS) will accelerate jets taking off at speed, assisting their take-off with such force the aircraft will be able to carry more fuel and weapons, therefore extending the reach and size of the punch the aircraft carrier packs. Early warning aircraft will be able to take off and land more easily, enhancing the carrier’s ability to spot its enemies from further away.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">EMALS is also able to launch more aircraft at a greater rate, getting more jets into the air faster than its opponents using older technologies – and is vital for defending itself against incoming attacks.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This latest feature gives the Fujian a significant edge, as only the United States’ latest Ford-class of aircraft carrier is equipped with it. France is slowly developing a similar system and India is examining its feasibility, but outside the US, only China employs this system. Its navy has yet to operate a nuclear-powered carrier, as the US has done for decades. The Fujian is conventionally powered but predictions are that the next one to be built by China will be nuclear-powered.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The first two carriers, the Liaoning and Shandong, were ex-Soviet designs; the Liaoning initially bought for scrap from Ukraine and refitted. While antiquated, they have been used to train new generations of naval officers and pilots in the complex science and art of aircraft carrier operations.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This carrier will certainly impact the PLANs maritime capabilities… but it will not significantly impact U.S. warfighting capabilities in the Western Pacific.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Compared with Liaoning and Shandong, U.S. Navy aircraft carriers are larger (about 100,000 tons full load displacement), nuclear powered (giving them greater cruising endurance than a conventionally powered ship), able to embark and operate a larger number of aircraft (60 or more), and launch fixed-wing aircraft using catapults, which can give those aircraft a range/payload capability greater than that of aircraft launched with a ski ramp.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">China&#8217;s third carrier, Fujian (Type 003), was launched (i.e., put into the water for the final stages of its construction) in on June 17, 2022. ONI expects the ship to enter service by 2024. It is expected to be conventionally powered, closer in size to U.S. Navy aircraft carriers, and equipped with catapults rather than a ski ramp for launching aircraft. China&#8217;s fourth carrier reportedly may have begun construction as early as 2021.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Observers have speculated that China may eventually field a force of four to six (or possibly more than six) aircraft carriers. In late November 2019, it was reported that the Chinese government, while deciding to proceed with the construction of the fourth carrier, had put on hold plans to build a fifth carrier, known as the Type 004, which was to be nuclear-powered, due to budgetary and technical considerations. Observers expect that it will be some time before China masters carrier-based aircraft operations on a substantial scale.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Liaoning (Type 001)</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Liaoning is a refurbished ex-Ukrainian aircraft carrier that China purchased from Ukraine in 1998 as an unfinished ship. It is conventionally powered, has an estimated full load displacement of 60,000 to 66,000 tons, and reportedly can accommodate an air wing of 30 or more fixed-wing airplanes and helicopters, including 24 fighters. The Liaoning lacks aircraft catapults and instead launches fixed-wing airplanes off the ship&#8217;s bow using an inclined ski ramp.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Some observers have referred to the Liaoning as China&#8217;s &#8220;starter&#8221; carrier. China has been using Liaoning in part for pilot training. In May 2018, China reportedly announced that the aircraft carrier group formed around Liaoning had reached initial operational capability (IOC), although that term might not mean the same as it does when used by DOD in connection with U.S. weapon systems.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Shandong (Type 002)</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Shandong is a modified version of the Liaoning design that incorporates some design improvements, including features that reportedly will permit it to embark and operate a larger air wing of 40 aircraft that includes 36 fighters. Its displacement is estimated at 66,000 to 70,000 tons.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Fujian (Type 003)</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Earlier press reports had generally stated that Fujian might have a displacement of 80,000 tons to 85,000 tons. A November 29, 2020, press report, however, stated that satellite images of the ship under construction suggest that this estimate may be a bit low, and that Fujian might be closer in displacement to U.S. Navy aircraft carriers, which have a displacement of about 100,000 tons. Fujian is expected to be equipped with electromagnetic catapults rather than a ski ramp, which will improve the range/payload capability of the fixed-wing aircraft that they operate. A July 14, 2021, blog post stated that the ship might be launched (i.e., put into the water for the final stages of its construction) before the end of 2021.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">China&#8217;s Fourth Carrier</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A May 1, 2022, press report states: &#8220;Recent images of a stealth fighter jet at a naval airbase suggest China has begun pilot training preparations for a fourth aircraft carrier, defence experts say.&#8221; Some sources have stated that China&#8217;s fourth aircraft carrier would be built to the Type 003 design. Press reports from October 10, 2022, and March 13, 2021, however, suggest that the ship may be nuclear-powered rather than conventionally powered.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Commercial Heavy-Lift Ship Reportedly Used in Exercise as Helicopter Carrier</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In August 2020, it was reported that China had used a commercial heavy-lift ship in a military exercise as a platform for operating at least two PLA Army helicopters.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Carrier-Based Aircraft</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">China&#8217;s primary carrier-based fighter aircraft is the J-15 or Flying Shark, an aircraft derived from the Russian Su-33 Flanker aircraft design that can operate from carriers equipped with a ski ramp rather than catapults, but which some observers have critiqued for its range/payload limitations in operations from carriers equipped with ski ramps rather than catapults. December 2021 press reports stated that China has developed an upgraded, catapult-capable version of the J-15 that could have improved range/payload when operated from a catapult-equipped carrier.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">China reportedly plans to develop a carrier-capable variant of its J-20 fifth-generation stealth fighter and/or a carrier-capable variant of its FC-31 fifth-generation stealth fighter (reportedly now designated J-35) to complement or succeed the J-15 on catapult-equipped Chinese carriers.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">China reportedly is also developing a carrier-based airborne early warning (AEW) aircraft, called the KJ-600, that is similar to the U.S. Navy&#8217;s carrier-based E-2 Hawkeye AEW aircraft, and stealth drone aircraft.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Roles and Missions</h3>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Although aircraft carriers might have some value for China in Taiwan-related conflict scenarios, they are not considered critical for Chinese operations in such scenarios, because Taiwan is within range of land-based Chinese aircraft. Consequently, most observers believe that China is acquiring carriers primarily for their value in other kinds of operations, and to demonstrate China&#8217;s status as a leading regional power and major world power. Chinese aircraft carriers could be used for power-projection operations, particularly in scenarios that do not involve opposing U.S. forces, and to impress or intimidate foreign observers.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Chinese aircraft carriers could also be used for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HA/DR) operations, maritime security operations (such as anti-piracy operations), and noncombatant evacuation operations (NEOs). Politically, aircraft carriers could be particularly valuable to China for projecting an image of China as a major world power, because aircraft carriers are viewed by many as symbols of major world power status. In a combat situation involving opposing U.S. naval and air forces, Chinese aircraft carriers would be highly vulnerable to attack by U.S. ships and aircraft, but conducting such attacks could divert U.S. ships and aircraft from performing other missions in a conflict situation with China.</p>

<p>China commissioned its first home-built aircraft carrier, the Shandong, in December last year. The Shandong was based on a design derived from China&#8217;s first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, which was a former Soviet Navy vessel, acquired from Ukraine. According to Chinese state-run media, construction of the Shandong had begun at the Dalian shipyard in Liaoning province in 2013.</p>
<p>On 19 July, Hong Kong-based media outlet South China Morning Post had reported that China is ramping work on its third and fourth aircraft carriers at the Jiangnan shipyard in Shanghai. &#8220;The Type 002 aircraft carrier—the country’s third carrier and the second to be domestically developed—has started the final assembly process,&#8221; the South China Morning Post reported, quoting sources. It noted that work on the third aircraft carrier had slowed down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Construction of the third aircraft carrier reportedly began in 2015. In December, the state-run Global Times reported the third aircraft carrier could be combat-ready by 2025.</p>
<p>“Workers are also starting the keel-laying for the new carrier’s sister ship. Both ships have been built by the Jiangnan Shipyard outside Shanghai,&#8221; the publication reported. Laying of the keel, the base structure of a ship&#8217;s hull, marks the beginning of full construction. Initial work on the fourth aircraft carrier had started in 2018, but was stopped in 2019, the South China Morning Post reported.</p>
<p>“Construction for the second Type 002 will be faster than the first one because workers have learned and overcome a lot of problems building the first one. It’s a challenging job because the Type 002 is our country’s first domestically designed aircraft carrier,&#8221; the South China Morning Post quoted a source as saying.</p>
<p>The third and fourth carriers will be different in design from the Liaoning and Shandong and will be significantly larger. Based on analysis of satellite imagery, US think tank Center for Strategic and International Studies has estimated that the third aircraft carrier would have a displacement of up to 85,000 tonnes, nearly 15,000 tonnes more than the Shandong. In comparison, the Indian Navy&#8217;s INS Vikramaditya displaces about 45,000 tonnes. Chinese state-run media claim the third aircraft carrier could carry over 50 aircraft.</p>
<p>The Liaoning and Shandong use a &#8216;ski-jump&#8217; to launch fighter aircraft; a ski-jump is a curved structure at the end of the flight deck, which allows a jet to take off at lower speed than required for sustained flight. Ski-jumps are used on aircraft carriers that lack catapults, which can impart momentum to the aircraft. A ski-jump limits both the number of jets that can be launched at a time and also restricts the weight at which an aircraft can take off.</p>
<p>In comparison, the third and fourth aircraft carriers for the People&#8217;s Liberation Army Navy are expected to use electromagnetic catapults to launch aircraft. Such systems are currently used only on one class of aircraft carrier, the US Navy&#8217;s Gerald Ford class. Electromagnetic catapults use a linear induction motor, instead of a steam piston, used on conventional steam catapults. Electromagnetic catapults can employ varied degrees of power to launch aircraft of different weights.</p>
<p>The presence of electromagnetic catapults would, theoretically, allow these Chinese aircraft carriers to launch aircraft at shorter intervals. It would also allow combat aircraft to take off at maximum possible weight, imparting greater combat range and higher weapons load and allow operation of larger aircraft like airborne-early warning systems.</p>
<p>The South China Morning Post reported the third aircraft carrier could operate a stealth fighter as its main aircraft. Media reports have claimed China envisions having a fleet of up to six aircraft carriers by 2035 to effectively challenge the US Navy.</p>

<p>The largest English portal in China has released some new photos showed that J-15 fighter jets have started take-off and landing training on aircraft carrier CNS Shandong.</p>
<p>The J-15s, also know as Flying Shark fighters, make its debut operational mission on the second aircraft carrier and the first such ship wholly designed and built in China.</p>
<p>Carrying the hull designation number 17, CNS Shandong is the largest, mightiest and most sophisticated naval ship ever developed and built in China.</p>
<p>Its construction began in November 2013 at Dalian Shipbuilding Industry, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corp, the world’s largest shipbuilder. It was launched in April 2017, conducted its maiden sea trial in May last year, and conducted eight other sea trials before being commissioned.</p>
<p>The CNS Shandong displaces at least 50,000 metric tons of water. It has conventional propulsion systems and uses a ramp to launch J-15 fighter jets, the spearhead of China’s carriers, like CNS Liaoning. The ship also deploys several types of helicopters.</p>
<p>As to J-15, this is twin-jet, all-weather, carrier-based fighter aircraft in development by the Shenyang Aircraft Corporation and the 601 Institute for the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy’s aircraft carriers. It is developed from J-11B as well as from studying of a prototype of Su-33.</p>
<p>China’s second aircraft carrier can carry at least 36 J-15 fighter jets, some 50 percent more than the country’s first.</p>
<p>China’s first aircraft carrier the Liaoning can carry 24 J-15 fighter jets, China Central Television (CCTV) reported, noting the new ship’s increased number of jets will add to its capability.</p>
