Hyderabad-based Dvipa Defence is set to supply 10 Ugram assault rifles to the Border Security Force (BSF) for trials, marking a significant step in India’s push for self-reliance in defense production. The Ugram, developed in collaboration with DRDO, is designed to meet the Indian Army’s needs with a 7.62x51mm caliber and has outperformed imported options in previous evaluations. If successful in the BSF trials, the Ugram could enhance India’s small arms ecosystem, although it must prove reliability with local ammunition and address concerns regarding logistical complexity. This initiative aligns with the Atmanirbhar Bharat campaign, reducing dependence on foreign arms while bolstering indigenous capabilities.
