India’s Bharat Electronics Limited has secured a ₹2.4 billion (approximately $275 million) contract to enhance the operational capabilities of the Indian Air Force’s Russian-origin Mi-17 V5 helicopters by equipping them with an indigenous electronic warfare suite. This system includes a radar warning receiver, a missile approach warning system, and a countermeasure dispensing system, significantly improving the helicopters’ survivability. The project promotes local defense manufacturing, as most subsystems will be sourced domestically. With around 150 Mi-17 V5s operational, this initiative underscores India’s commitment to modernizing its military assets while boosting the domestic defense ecosystem.
