The Indian Navy has signed a Project Sanction Order with Kirloskar Oil Engines Limited for the design and development of a 6MW Medium Speed Marine Diesel Engine, valued at Rs 270 crore, with 70% funding from the Indian government. This initiative marks a significant stride towards self-reliance in marine engine production, previously dominated by foreign imports. The project aims for over 50% indigenous content and encompasses designs for engines ranging from 3-10MW, supporting both Main Propulsion and Power Generation for naval vessels. This advancement aligns with the government’s Aatmanirbharta initiative to bolster indigenous defense capabilities, reduce foreign dependency, and enhance the domestic defense industrial ecosystem.
