Indian Ocean Region includes vital sea lanes that are important for Energy security and seaborne trade, It has a number of littoral states with fragile regimes. Somne od Asia’s largest economies are affected by the security of the IOR. The power play in the region has produced numerous hot spots. Major navies of the world operate here through choke points and strategic Straits
with nuclear aircraft carriers and submarines. Military bases and forces deployed in the region have increased chances of confrontation. Piracy piracy continues to be a menace forcing naval cooperation amongst navies to defeat the threat. The regional is rich in oil, gas and sub-sea minerals. A number of islands in the IOR are in tyhe Indian zone of influence – Seychelles, Madagascar, Mauritius, Maldives. China’s String of Pearls strategy is of concern.
