The DRDO has unveiled a prototype of a 6.8mm assault rifle, potentially reshaping the Indian Army’s small arms inventory amid challenges in importing the SIG716 and delays in the AK-203 project. This rifle, designed for versatility, is lighter than existing 7.62mm options while retaining significant stopping power. Its development aligns with India’s ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative, emphasizing indigenous production and self-reliance. However, successful testing and establishing a supply chain for the new caliber will be critical for its adoption, as it competes against already inducted rifles like the SIG716 and the potentially revived AK-203 program, amidst evolving operational requirements.
