India’s Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) has unveiled the BM-04, a new short-range ballistic missile capable of hypersonic speeds, positioned to enhance India’s military capabilities against anti-access/area denial (A2/AD) threats. With a range of 400 to 1500 kilometres, a 500 kg warhead, and an impressive accuracy of less than 30 metres circular error probability (CEP), the BM-04 is designed for quick deployment using a mobile launcher. This development

places India among a select group of nations with hypersonic missile technology, reinforcing its strategic deterrence and operational flexibility in a contested environment. The missile’s design shares similarities with the Agni I-class, indicating progress in hypersonic weaponry.

The BM-04 is designed as a boost-glide vehicle, enabling it to achieve hypersonic speeds (Mach 5 and above). This makes it capable of evading radar and missile defenses. The missile was showcased at the Vigyan Vaibhav 2025 defense exhibition in Hyderabad, marking a significant step in India’s missile development.
